When I was kid, Ruston telephone numbers all began with “Alpine 5.” The north side of town, Chautauqua and Cooktown, were considered country and we shared a “party line” with my grandparents.

My grandmother never met a stranger, and she could tie up this jointly occupied, outgoing phone line for hours. Mom could field a wrong number and have an entire afternoon conversation with the stranger on the other end, only to become friends by dark.
