The lesser prairie chicken
This is the story of the lesser prairie chicken and its struggle for survival.
Never heard of the lesser prairie chicken? Neither had I until I came across an obscure news item about the bird’s possible listing as a threatened species.
The LPC as it’s known, is a species of grouse found in the prairie states (hence the name) of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. It seems several groups, including some farm and ranch groups, are working to have the bird added to the threatened list under the Endangered Species Act. The groups say certain farming practices, along with oil exploration and logging are impacting the bird’s habitat. The American Farm Bureau has voiced its opposition to the listing, saying farmers can work their lands and manage the bird’s habitat at the same time.
