The large eastern cities like Boston, New York and Philadelphia are on the threshold of massive shut-downs of their busiest streets. Most of their buried utilities are in deplorable condition and need replacement. When the water lines, sewer lines and electrical cables were installed, the assumption was that they would not need replacing for 50 years. The 50 years concluded 25 or more years ago.

The reason for the delay in repairs is due to the requirement to shut down streets for one to two years. There are high-rise apartments and office buildings with thousands of people residing there. Closing the streets would have a devastating effect on them. Most of those people are not aware of the problem.

Recently, Ruston affected similar repairs on their city streets. It was bothersome for local residents but it was a manageable program. The finished product is nothing short of excellent. Those individuals responsible can take credit for the fine results we all see and enjoy. It is an obvious advantage of living in a small town.
