RPAR peddles bike drive for homeless

Pictured are a group of cyclists who rode through Ruston raising awareness for their cause. This month, donated bikes are needed for a different cause — to help the homeless.

Michael Plette, recreation assistant at Ruston Parks and Recreation, cycles in his free time. Recently his mind spun a plan to bring RPAR into a partnership with Shreveport’s The HUB ministry, a nonprofit that serves the city’s homeless population. On Aug. 28, in the RPAR parking lot, RPAR bicycles will help collected bikes for them. Turbo Goat owner Chris Bartlet will be on hand in the James Street lot to repair bicycles that need minor repairs.

Cassie Hammet, director of The HUB, estimates Shreveport’s homeless population to be from 800 to 1,000 people. The ministry reaches out to them by providing necessities.
