All parents want their children to grow up healthy and happy, but when should parents start to take necessary measures to ensure they have the best chances of a successful future? Is it during infancy, toddlerhood? Parents can actually start their child down the path to a healthy life during pregnancy. Although not all birth defects can be prevented, by following practices such as eating healthy and avoiding dangerous habits, such as smoking and drinking during pregnancy, parents are giving their child the best start in life that they can give.

When talking to their health care provider, most mothers are given a guideline as to what foods they should eat, what they should avoid and how much weight they should gain. After talking to your doctor, the USDA’s My Pyramid has various resources to help mothers develop some healthy eating habits. During pregnancy it is important to remember that the foods you are eating are not only for you now, but for the baby also.

A healthy weight gain is often related to the health of the baby. The amount of weight you should gain often depends on how much you weighed before you were pregnant. A weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds is typical if the mother was in a healthy weight range before. If you are concerned about how much weight you should gain or if you think that you are not gaining enough weight, then you should talk to your health care provider.
