Animal cruelty should not be tolerated
There are few things in life sadder than when a helpless creature is abused. The news that a dogfighting ring was discovered Thursday on Turner Street in Ruston is shocking and deplorable. Hopefully, those living in the neighborhood who suspected the crime ring had enough heart to call the authorities. Nevertheless, the Ruston Police Department stepped in and arrested the suspected dog handlers.
After the dogs were examined by a veterinarian, a Ruston Animal Control officer said the dogs were reportedly malnourished and had new and old scars from dog bites or dog fighting.
According to the article printed in the Ruston Daily Leader’s Sunday edition, six pit bulls and two other dogs were seized by Ruston Animal Control officers and will not be returned to the owners. This is in compliance with Louisiana State Statute 14:102, which prohibits dog cruelty and fighting.
