The man shot to death Thursday during a crime spree in West Monroe was a Ruston native.
Garland E. “Gene” Henley Jr., 58, of West Monroe, was shot outside of Brookshire’s Supermarket on Cypress Street. He was reported transported to Glenwood Medical Center, where he later died.

Henley, a retired oil field worker, was born on Aug. 22, 1952, in Ruston. He was a 1971 graduate of Ruston High School, where he ran track and played football. His alleged killer, Steven Lane Salsbury Jr., 26, shot and killed himself Friday during a standoff at a Bass Pro Shop parking lot in downtown Oklahoma City.

Ruston Police Chief Steve Rogers was a childhood friend of Henley’s and said he was saddened by the news.
