Rapping students learn math facts through song
The sixth-graders in Patsy Williams’ math class were having problems with their multiplication tables. The “Rote” memory practices of years ago proved to be of little help, as well, threats of giving zeros was not accepted. A dilemma had arisen, one that challenged Ms. Williams’ teaching experience. What could be done to motivate a group of energetic sixth grade students to learn their multiplication tables?
The answer came in a most unusual way. It was all too obvious and quite simple. What form of music do young people often copy? “Rapping.” It was a no-brainer. Williams had already noticed that during recess duty her students “rapped” while playing and never missed a beat.
