The recent shooting of U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people at a community outreach event in Tucson, Ariz., has left many wondering what, if anything, could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

The incident involving suspected shooter Jared Loughner left six dead and the others, including Giffords, wounded. National news reports indicate Giffords was the intended target.
