Caverns often used for storage
Salt caverns are commonly used for underground storage of natural gas. But of the 18 in Louisiana, only the Arcadia site is in north Louisiana.
David Dismukes, of Acadian Consulting Group, said in an economic impact study that Arcadia Gas Storage’s facility will meet seasonal and short-term demands for natural gas.
Like the natural gas that it will store, a salt dome is a product of prehistoric times and the accumulation of salt from inland seas. Oil and gas also are associated with the domes. One of the best known salt domes is Avery Island, home to Tabasco sauce.
