Winter weather: South Maple Street closed today

South Maple Street between West Barnett Springs Avenue and Beech Street remains closed today because of the weather. As of 10 a.m., city officials had no estimate on when street would reopen.
Public Works Director John Freeman said the decision to close the road was made shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday because the shady slope was hazardous to motorists.
“Rather than tax our resources overnight, it was prudent to shut that down,” he said.
The railroad bridges at Bonner Street, Everett Street and East Mississippi Avenue also remain closed.
City police and sheriff’s deputies have worked scores of incidents over the past two days involving vehicles sliding off icy roadways. Road conditions are expected to improve this afternoon when the temperature climbs above freezing for the first time since Sunday.
