Ruston High head baseball coach Zack Smith confirmed to the Leader he has resigned as head coach of the Bearcats after a 5-16 start to the 2024 season.

Smith, nearly three years into his stint as the Bearcats' head skipper, resigned at 11 a.m. Monday after talking with school administration. Before taking over the program, Smith had previously worked five seasons as an assistant coach.

RHS principal Dan Gressett said finding Smith's replacement will be top priority for the school.

"Coach Smith resigned this morning but will continue teaching at RHS," Gressett said. "We will name an interim coach in the next day or so to get us through the remainder of the season. After the season we will open the position up and take applicants."

The Bearcats are scheduled to play on the road at Calvary Baptist Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
