Buddy's Blog: Plenty of subjects can quell writer’s block as Tech great

in

Sometimes, a writer hits Ye Olde Block and the words just don’t want to appear on an iPhone, iPad or computer screen.
This is one of those times.
Maybe it’s a case of simply having too many subjects I want to cover and I’m in a quandary as to which one I care to devote the space to in this blog:
More post-NFL Draft observations on Louisiana Tech University’s Carlos Henderson, Trent Taylor and Xavier Woods and Grambling State University’s Chad Williams.
Derek Jeter’s retirement ceremony.
The NBA playoffs.

Tech’s super year keeps adding laurels

in
Davis, Buddy 2015.jpg

The fun began in September and is still going strong in May.
It’s been great being a fan of the Louisiana Tech University athletics’ program for the past nine months.
As we noted in an earlier column not that long ago, this school year can be placed alongside of others when the words of “best ever” are used.
They are certainly entitled to such a lofty label in 2016-17.
Football?
Nine wins for a third consecutive season, plus a third straight bowl vicfory.
A West Division crown and berth in Conference USA championship game.

Garrison’s pick six on game’s final play lifts Ruston to Spring Game victory

There’s nothing like a walk-off win in football.
And that’s exactly what the Ruston High School Bearcats did Friday night in the game portion of a controlled practice/scrimmage with Wossman as Jalen Garrison’s 85-yard interception return on the game’s final play lifted RHS to a 12-7 win over the Wildcats.

Every year on the Sunday of the week before Memorial Day, Shirley Soto and a group of her family members stand on the side of Interstate 20 and watch the motorcycles go by.
“It just makes my heart sing,” Soto, of Ruston, said.
The bikers, generally hundreds of them, are participants in the annual Run For The Wall ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. This year’s riders are expected to pass through Lincoln Parish shortly after 4 p.m. today.
The group will be traveling eastbound on Interstate 20.

‘So blessed’: Grambling couple recalls stories of life

Islands celebrate 64 years of marriage
islands.jpg

“Sixty-four years.”
The Rev. Henry E. Island smiled as he said it. Clotie “Pete” Gipson Island, his wife, moved just a little closer to him in the chair she occupied right next to his in the formal living room of their Grambling home.
Their family was busy around them as they prepared for their wedding anniversary celebration, which was held last Saturday.
When asked to tell the story of how they met and fell in love, he laughed and looked at his wife.
“Do you want to tell it?” Henry Island said.
She smiled and waved her hand at him.
“You tell it better.”
