Ephemera opening reception planned

The School of Architecture will present an exhibition featuring a selection of works of ephemera from the collection of Saul Zalesch, Professor of Art History at Louisiana Tech University and curator of ephemerastudies.org.
Illustration of Design and Construction will be on display through Feb. 13. With the opening reception set to take place from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday in the Architecture Gallery of Hale Hall on Tech’s campus.

Beta Sigma Phi meets

The Louisiana Laureate Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed several social functions this holiday season. On Nov. 6, they enjoyed a “Light’N’ My Pocketbook” Ladies Day Out shopping trip to Antique Alley with lunch at Kayla’s Kitchen.
In December, the club held its annual Couples’ Christmas Party, “Light of My Life,” at Calvert Crossing Golf Club in Calhoun on the evening of Dec. 7. Linda Richmond served as chairperson; Beverly Beasley and Mary Calloway served as co-chairs. Chapter members and guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner and music with dancing.

Chamblee to speak

Steve Chamblee, horticulturist for Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas, will be the keynote speaker at the Third Annual Gardening Seminar on Feb. 1, from 8 a.m. - noon in Lomax Hall on the Louisiana Tech University campus.

RCT celebrates romance with comedy number

Ruston Community Theatre’s upcoming production, the romantic comedy “Same Time, Next Year,” written by award-winning playwright Bernard Slade, will debut at the Dixie Center for the Arts on Feb. 27 and run through March 2.
The play originally appeared on Broadway in 1975 and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding New American Play and Outstanding Actress in a Play. Same Time, Next Year is sponsored by Gnemi Financial Strategies of Ruston.

Locals urged to practice fire safety

A burn ban has been issued for the parish after the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 has responded to seven grass and woods fires since Saturday.
That brings the total number of grass and woods fire responses to 13 this month.
Capt. Dustin St. Andre said after responding to such a large number of calls, the department decided to issue a burn ban.
This burn ban, issued Monday, means the department has banned all open-air outdoor burning.

Citizen input on zoning desired

Of all the issues with which municipalities must deal, zoning may be one of the trickiest. That’s because when it comes to telling somebody what they can and can’t do with their property, things can get mighty personal real quickly.
Ruston has had its share of zoning squabbles over the years. Some people care a lot; some people don’t care at all, and most folks are probably somewhere down the middle.

Routing the Rebels

Bearcats race past West Monroe, 79-47

The Ruston High School Bearcats started their District 2-5A season on a winning note Tuesday as they exploded to a 79-47 home win over West Monroe.
RHS is now 13-7 overall and 1-0 in district play while West Monroe fell to 3-16 and 0-1.
Ruston’s smothering defense forced turnover after turnover that the Bearcats converted many of into points and helped RHS take control early and march to a 38-13 by halftime.
Isiah Buggs led the Bearcats with 24 points.

Diaz takes over Tech defense

Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz confirmed national reports Tuesday that former Texas and Mississippi State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has been hired in the same capacity with the Bulldogs.
Diaz brings an impressive resume that includes 14 years of experience and appearances in 12 bowl games. He was most recently the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas (2011-13), a team that showed vast improvement in run defense during his tenure.

Techsters to host Florida Atlantic

Louisiana Tech hosts Conference USA’s top 3-point shooting team when the Lady Techsters face Florida Atlantic at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech is 5-12 on the season and still looking for its first league win after dropping four straight Conference USA contests. Florida Atlantic is 11-6 on the season but has dropped two straight and three of its last four.

Broom used in altercation between inmates

An altercation at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center resulted in an already incarcerated man having another charge added to his rap sheet.
At approximately 5:23 p.m. Jan. 13 Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to LPDC in reference to an altercation between inmates.
Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Warden Jim Tuten who reported that two inmates had gotten into an altercation.
The affidavit stated Tuten informed the deputy that Frederick White, 24, of 1302 First St., Winnsboro, struck Ryan Caldwell with a broom during the fight.
