NCLAC needs help to keep kids creating

The North Central Louisiana Arts Council is holding an Art Supply Drive and it needs help.
Every year NCLAC works hard to provide year-round opportunities for kids of all ages to participate in art-inspired events, from making their own seasonal crafts and tie-dyed clothing, to basic drawing and painting classes.
NCLAC relies on donations to furnish most of its art supplies, and this summer it anticipates exhausting its supply as it holds a series of children’s arts and crafts projects at the Ruston’s Farmers Market, held each Saturday morning in downtown Ruston.

Tech kinesiology professor runs for second term on national board

David Szymanski, associate professor of kinesiology at Louisiana Tech University and strength and conditioning coach for the Tech baseball team, is running for a second term as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Overlay a lesson in change

The march of the University Hills Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District Committee’s proposal for rezoning a sizeable chunk of southwest Ruston may be one of the most educational journeys upon which the city has embarked in a long time.
The plan, Ruston’s first venture into the neighborhood overlay world, seeks to rezone the 17 neighborhoods that make up the University Hills area into a district specifically designed to enable residents to preserve, maintain and promote reinvestment in those older neighborhoods.

Second season for GSU

Tigers to open SWAC tourney play today

NEW ORLEANS — The second season starts for the Grambling State University baseball team today as the Tigers begin play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
GSU, the No. 4 seed, (14-30), will take on top-seeded Alabama State (34-19, 21-3 SWAC) at 6 p.m. today in New Orleans at the Urban Youth Academy’s Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The winner will take on the winner of a Texas Southern vs. Alcorn State first round game at 6 p.m. Thursday in the double elimination tournament.

Lang ready for regionals

Louisiana Tech sophomore Victor Lange returns to Briggs Ranch Golf Club this week in San Antonio, Texas as NCAA Regional play begins Thursday.
Lange enters as the No. 4 seed among 10 individuals in a tournament that features 10 individuals and 13 teams. His appearance marks the first by a Bulldog golfer at the NCAA Regionals in school history.

’Cats set for Spring Game

Ruston High School’s Spring Football Game is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Joe Aillet Staium. Fans will be able to enter on the east side of the stadium only. There will be a $5 admission with all proceeds being donated to the Rodney Guin Hospital Fund. Guin, the head football coach at Haughton High School, suffered a severe heart attack several weeks ago and is currently hospitalized at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

Tech fans can personalize season football tickets

Louisiana Tech fans that renew or reserve their 2014 football season tickets by June 5 can add their selfie to the season ticket graphics.
Fans just need to renew their season tickets by the June 5 deadline and send a picture of themselves — commonly known as a “selfie” — while wearing LA Tech apparel to TechTickets@LATech.edu and that picture will be included on a background graphic on the season ticket page.

Funeral service for Mr. Perry Lee Kirkham, age 75 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 15, 2014 at DaySpring Ministry Baptist Church, formerly Southside Baptist Church on 167 South. Officiating the service will be Rev. J.E. Brown and Rev. Drew Spillers. The service is under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Funeral services for Roberta Carolyn Green Hinton “Ro Ro”, age 74, of Ruston, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 16, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Jerry Hilbun, assisted by Rev. Rolly Walker, and Rev. Cathy Brewton. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
