Local teen wins state crown

The Dixie Gem Peach Outstanding Teen, Meagan Crews, front, was crowned Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen on Saturday night. She was also preliminary talent winner as well as preliminary fitness winner. She was awarded more than $3,500 in scholarships and will go on to compete at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.
Donna Kay Thompson, Dixie Gem Peach Scholarship Organization board member, said the organization is proud of Crews’ accomplishment.

Choudrant business postponed

A special meeting of the Village of Choudrant Council will have to be held later this month as only one council member was present at the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night.
A special meeting will be required, Town Clerk Celeste Butler said, because the budget for fiscal year 2014-15, among other official beginning of year business, must be passed during June, when the fiscal year begins. Butler said the date of the special meeting will be made public when it is decided upon.

Ruston approves first ever overlay district

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen made history Monday night. It approved the city’s first neighborhood conservation overlay district, leading Mayor Dan Hollingsworth to call the decision “a proud moment in our community’s history.”
The unanimous vote on the request by the University Hills Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District Committee came after aldermen also unanimously agreed to remove Robert Street from the plan.

Peach Stop game aims to boost local businesses

The Louisiana Peach Festival is looking to give away a $1,000 prize package to the person who visits the most participating businesses during the festival’s newest event, the Peach Stop.
“We wanted to do something that helps all our merchants, not just our downtown merchants,” Judy Copeland, Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce president, said.

When to prune and reasons to do so

Although late winter is generally the ideal time for pruning chores, many of our spring-blooming shrubs are best pruned immediately after flowers have faded.
Observing the plants in north Louisiana, many of these have finished blooming and now is the time to begin pruning such plants as azaleas, spirea, mock-orange, weigela, camellia, sasanqua camellia, forsythia, deutzia, banana shrub, sweet olive, honeysuckle and flowering quince.

Youth show expertise in trapping

Zachery Skipper and John Pruden competed in the Sanson Elimination Trap Event in April at the Arcadia Gun Club and placed in the top 15 junior/sub-juniors across the state. Zack and John were sponsored to compete in May at the 2014 Louisiana Trapshooting Association State Shoot held at Hunter’s Run Gun Club in Port Allen.
