Tollett talks diabetes with Lions Club

Kristi Tollett, a self-described advocate of diabetes education, was a recent guest of the Ruston Lions Club. Tollett made a presentation regarding detection and treatment as well as the impact on her own child who is diabetic.

GSU gears up to put 2012 in the past

For Grambling State, the offseason has been a long and frustrating one following last year’s 1-10 campaign for the tickets.
But now the Tigers are preparing to put the spectre of the 2012 season behind them for good as GSU plays host to Alabama A&M at 6 p.m. Saturday to open the 2013 slate.
GSU coach Doug Williams said Monday that he expects a good crowd to open the season at Robinson Stadium but admitted it feels a little strange starting things off with Alabama A&M as opposed to Alcorn State.

Lady Techsters looking for first soccer win vs. JSU

Louisiana Tech will take on its third opponent in five days as it travels to face Jackson State in Jackson, Miss., at 4 p.m. today at the JSU Soccer Field.
Tech (0-2) is still in search of their first win and first goal after being shutout in back-to-back matches to open the 2013 season. It marked the first time since 2007 that the Lady Techsters have gone scoreless and point-less in the first two matches.

Be true to your schools

Area football teams are asking their fans to butt into their seasons this year — as in put their butts into stadium seats.
Football tickets are now on sale for the upcoming football seasons, which begin Saturday for Louisiana Tech and Grambling State and on Sept. 6 for area high school teams.
Louisiana Tech season and single game tickets for the 2013 football season are currently on sale. To purchase tickets please call the Tech Ticket Office at 318-257-3631, email techtickets@latech.edu or visit LATechSports.com.

Controlling morning madness

School is back in session. If you haven’t gotten back into a routine, which has never been one of my strong virtues, I want to share tips for controlling that morning madness:
• Mornings go smoother if you get up at least a half-hour earlier than the children do. If you get up ahead of the rest of the family you can shower and dress at a leisurely pace. If you are ready you have more time to help your children get organized and it makes for a less hectic morning.

Celebrate women's right to vote

Almost 100 years ago, women gained the right to vote.
I get a lot of emails, and one such email alerted me to that fact about a week ago. So, with it also being voter registration week, I thought it would be a great time to encourage women to get involved and exercise their greatest civic duty ­— the right to vote.
However, after looking into it a little, I realized women didn’t really need much encouragement, at least not on a national level.
