Domestic violence in Louisiana: Good news and bad

If you or someone you love is a victim of domestic violence, there is encouraging news from this year’s legislative session in Baton Rouge.
Compared to last year, when shelters were threatened with drastic budget cuts which would have resulted in closure for several state programs, our funds were safe this year. We thank our legislators and Gov. Bobby Jindal for protecting families who are already living with pain, trauma, and fear, from facing possible homelessness as well.

This workshop will feature basic juicing techniques and recipes along with how to make smoothies as well as gourmet coffee drinks.

Techsters add Marquette duo

Louisiana Tech head coach Tyler Summitt has announced that former Marquette University guards Brooklyn Pumroy and Ashley Santos have signed financial aid agreements and will be enrolling at Tech and joining the Lady Techsters basketball program.

Tech relay team headed to NCAA Championships

Trey Hadnot, left, and Jarvis Gotch are two of the four-man 4x100-meter relay team that wll compete in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, later this month. Devin Henderson and Dennis Richardson are the other members of that relay team.

Stay safe, enjoy the water

With the kids out of school and summer upon us, many families will be headed out to beaches, the lake and more to enjoy one of Louisiana’s favorite summer pastimes — hitting the water.
From fishing and water skiing to swimming, there are tons of ways to cool off from the summer heat while enjoying the water. Swimming, especially, even offers the benefit of allowing families to get in some physical activity during the summer months, when running and walking outside might not be ideal.

Hurricane preparedness a must

As June 1 rolled around yesterday, the annual hurricane season kicked off.
While we don’t have to have the same concerns as our coastal brethren in south Louisiana, experience has shown we can be affected by hurricanes here in the northern part of the state, especially by helping evacuees find shelter from the storm for a few days.
We’ve had hurricanes strong enough to wreack havoc in our part of the state at times and sometimes the smaller tropical storms that stall out over our part of the state after working their way onshore have cause substantial flooding in north Louisiana.

Services for Mrs. Jo Ann C. Spears will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Pineville with Scott Wayne Spears officiating, assisted by Robbie Spears. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Ruston, at 3 p.m. today. The family requests that visitation be observed Tuesday at Hixson Brothers, Pineville from 8:00 a.m. until time of service. Mrs. Jo Ann Spears, 84, of Ruston passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Grace Home, Alexandria.
