Alice Mae Brokaw Wideman

Alice Mae Brokaw Wideman passed away Wednesday morning August 21, 2013. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Carter Wideman, and a son, William Carter Wideman. She is survived by her son, Fred Wideman and his wife Ann Caraway Wideman of Baton Rouge, LA and daughter, Lucy Wideman Sexton and her husband Ronnie Sexton, of Ruston, LA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grand children.

Gloria Bryant

Gloria Bryant, age 66, of Hermitage, AR passed away on August 22, 2013 at her residence. She was born on December 18, 1946 to her parents, Richard L. and Arzona W. Howard Bryant. Mrs. Bryant was a zookeeper for the Crossland Zoo and had also worked for Safeway in Ruston, LA for 26 years. She was a member of Egypt Missionary Baptist Church.

LPDC guard arrested, charged with prisoner abuse

Today, investigators with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations arrested a prison guard employed at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center. The arrest was a result of a joint investigation initiated by Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone on Aug. 12.

Nelson, Blackwelder to wed

Bruce and Cheryl Nelson, of Colville, Wash., are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching wedding of their daughter Grace Nelson to Cody Blackwelder, of Ruston.

Grace is the granddaughter of Ned and Jeane Swanson, of Colville, Wash., and Sandy and Doris Nelson, of Spokane, Wash. She is a 2005 graduate of Colville Senior High School and a 2011 graduate of Washington State University with a degree in comparative ethnic studies. She is currently employed in the hospitality industry.

Council introduces budget ordinance

Ruston’s proposed $55.1 million budget for the coming fiscal year is on its way to the Board of Aldermen for approval.
The 2014 spending plan won the endorsement of the board’s personnel-finance committee Monday night. Aldermen vote on the budget ordinance Sept. 9. The fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
The proposed budget is $1.7 million less than the current budget, and is an effort by Mayor Dan Hollingsworth to tighten the city’s financial belt in light of rising retirement system costs and generally flat sales tax revenue.
