Boersma, McGehee, Moore inducted into MC’s Mortar Board society

Fifty students at Mississippi College were recently inducted into the Mortar Board Cap and Gown Society for 2013-14, America’s premier national honor society that spotlights college seniors for their achievement in scholarship, leadership and service projects.
Three local students were welcomed into Mortar Board.
Those students are:
• Aaron Boersma, the son of David and Rachel Boersma, of Ruston.
• Andrew McGehee, the son of Dr. David and Michele McGehee, of Ruston.
• Elizabeth Moore, the daughter of Byron and Melinda Moore, of Ruston.

KANSAS CITY — As the G-Men gathered in the hotel lobby for a team dinner, the sounds of John Legend’s “Ordinary People” was being played on a black piano. It wasn’t Legend; it was freshman kicker and punter Jonathan Wallace.
“We were bored and the piano was just sitting there,” said Wallace, a Rayville native, “so I went over there and just started playing.”

Sooners on ’Dogs’ slate

Tech to play at OU in 2014

Louisiana Tech officials announced Wednesday that the school has added Oklahoma to its 2014 non-conference football schedule.
The game, which will be held on Aug. 30 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., will be the first meeting between the two schools. Oklahoma plays in the Big 12 Conference along with Kansas, whom Louisiana Tech faces this Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
The 2014 schedule for Louisiana Tech will include eight Conference USA games and four non-conference contests.

Techsters reveal hoops schedule

Four games against Southeastern Conference opponents, seven games against in-state schools and its first run through Conference USA highlight the 2013-14 women’s basketball schedule for Louisiana Tech, released on Wednesday.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. will also play 13 games against teams that participated in the postseason last year, including six NCAA qualifiers, six WNIT participants and the Women’s Basketball Invitational runner-up.

Tech hires Parker as hitting coach

After spending last season as an assistant for the Diamond ’Dogs, Olen Parker returns to head coach Wade Simoneaux’s staff in a different capacity as he is set to take over as a full-time assistant and hitting coach for the Louisiana Tech baseball program.
Parker replaces former hitting coach Fran Andermann, who coached on Simoneaux’s staff for 11 seasons from 2002-2013.

Sportsman’s Jamboree to be held tonight

The 34th Annual Sportsman’s Jamboree will be held tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center at Louisiana Tech University.
The special guest speaker for this year’s jamboree will be nationally known entertainer and hunter Ray Eye from Missouri.
What’s new in outdoor products will be displayed around the rotunda at the TAC and numerous door prizes will be awarded.
Doors open will at 4 p.m. with the actual program beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The event is free to the public.

Sportsman’s Expo set for Saturday

The fourth annual Sportsman’s Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Willie Davis Jr. Recreation Center, located at 116 Cox Ferry Road in Farmerville.
Admission for ages 12 and up is $5 and children 11 and under are free.
There will be approximately 50 vendors along with country music performer, Katie Knight, as the guest announcer for a Duckmen Look-Alike Contest. Prizes will be awarded to the best “Look-Alike” in the adult category (ages 18 and above) and in the youth category (ages 17 and below).

Billy Dean Bryan

Billy Dean Bryan was born November 28, 1939 into the union of Myrtle Mavis Greer of Arcadia and Elvis Bryan of Downsville and died on September 16, 2013 peacefully at home. Bill graduated from Downsville High School and then Louisiana State University. He received a Masters of Business Administration degree from Louisiana Tech University's first MBA class and became a CPA. Bill married Sue Hogg Bryan in 1962 and had three children, Scott, Jeff and Keli. Bill began working in his father's sausage plant, Bryan Sausage, as a teenager and went on to manage the business for several decades.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF INTENT
The Wesley Chapel Water System intends to file an application for federal assistance with the USDA Rural Development for funding of a water system improvemnets project. Prior to incurring the obligations of the proposed loan and/or grant, the system will obtain authorization by vote of its Board of Directors. A public meeting to discuss this project will be held on October 1, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Rest Missionary Baptist Church Family Life Center located at 813 St. Rest Rd., Quitman, LA.
