Banks nominated

in
Tech receiver candidate for Wuerffel Trophy

Louisiana Tech has nominated Wide Receiver/Return Specialist D.J. Banks for the 2013 Wuerffel Trophy reports Patrick Walsh, Director of Media Communications.
The senior from West Monroe High School majoring in Business, was 2012 First Team All-WAC and First Team Preseason Conference USA after transferring to Tech from Tulane in 2011. He’s very active in giving back to the community in the way of speaking and mentoring local youth.

Hunt finds a hole for the Bearcats

Ruston High freshman running back Carlos Hunt breaks free to gain yardage Monday in a freshman team game against Minden. The Bearcats fell to Minden 33-7 in that contest.

Harris honored

Glynn Harris, longtime outdoor writer for the Leader, walked away with two awards last week at the annual convention of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association in Lake Charles.
Harris was awarded first and third places in the audio broadcast category for two programs he aired recently on his weekly radio program, O’Neal Outdoors, sponsored by O’Neal Farm and Garden in Ruston.
In August, Harris also won two awards at the annual meeting of the Louisiana Outdoor Writer’s Association in Lafayette. He won first place in photography and second place in newspaper columns.

Events set for Tech Homecoming weekend

Homecoming 2013 is right around the corner at Louisiana Tech as there are plenty of events planned surrounding this weekend where alums and fans return to campus to celebrate their university’s rich tradition.
Homecoming 2013 will be highlighted by the Bulldogs hosting Conference USA foe North Texas at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Joe Aillet Stadium.
In addition to the match-up on the field, the pregame festivities include tailgating as well as the singing of the national anthem by former Tech football player and current country music star Trace Adkins.

Frank C. "Red" Stewart

Frank C. "Red" Stewart passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Red was born on November 24, 1919 to Frank Crawford Stewart and Lorine Saunders Stewart in Hodge, La. He is predeceased by his brother James Saunders Stewart and sister Nancy Lorine Finch. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, he along with many of his friends immediately signed up for military service. He became a Naval Aviator and flew transports as a US Marine in the South Pacific Theater, prior to returning to the US to train in the new F7F Tigercat in 1944.

Funeral services for Reese Hood will be held Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel in Minden. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Flenniken. Interment will follow at St. Rest Cemetery in Arcadia. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, Louisiana. Reese was born December 29, 1935 in Ruston, Louisiana and he passed away peacefully October 14, 2013 in Minden, Louisiana. Reese was employed by Minden Housing Authority as Executive Director.

Graveside services for Connie Tyra, 74 of Ruston will be at 12:00 noon Saturday, October 18, 2013 in Mount Zion Cemetery at Clay, LA under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Tyra died Saturday, October 12, 2013 in Ruston.
Mrs. Tyra is preceded in death by her husband Don Tyra. She is survived by her children; Pam Smith of Ruston, Phillip and Emmy Tyra of North Dakota, Michael and Elaine Tyra of Florida; Nine Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. Karen Lewis, 71, of Ruston, LA, passed away peacefully August 25 in Maplewood, NJ. An informal gathering of friends and family will be held at the Lincoln Parish Museum, 609 N. Vienna St. in Ruston from 5:30 PM to 7 PM Wednesday, Oct. 16. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org. Karen is survived by her sister Diane of Sneedville, TN, her son Greg of Maplewood, NJ, daughter -in-law Christine, and grandchildren Henry and Imogene.

Mr. Kenneth Ashby Bowen

A memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Ashby Bowen,74, of D’Arbonne Community will be held at 3:00pm Wednesday at Culbertson Baptist Church with Bro. Jeff May and Gary Canterberry officiating.  Burial will be in Culbertson Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home of Farmerville.
