Second season for GSU

Tigers to open SWAC tourney play today

NEW ORLEANS — The second season starts for the Grambling State University baseball team today as the Tigers begin play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
GSU, the No. 4 seed, (14-30), will take on top-seeded Alabama State (34-19, 21-3 SWAC) at 6 p.m. today in New Orleans at the Urban Youth Academy’s Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The winner will take on the winner of a Texas Southern vs. Alcorn State first round game at 6 p.m. Thursday in the double elimination tournament.

Lang ready for regionals

Louisiana Tech sophomore Victor Lange returns to Briggs Ranch Golf Club this week in San Antonio, Texas as NCAA Regional play begins Thursday.
Lange enters as the No. 4 seed among 10 individuals in a tournament that features 10 individuals and 13 teams. His appearance marks the first by a Bulldog golfer at the NCAA Regionals in school history.

’Cats set for Spring Game

Ruston High School’s Spring Football Game is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Joe Aillet Staium. Fans will be able to enter on the east side of the stadium only. There will be a $5 admission with all proceeds being donated to the Rodney Guin Hospital Fund. Guin, the head football coach at Haughton High School, suffered a severe heart attack several weeks ago and is currently hospitalized at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

Tech fans can personalize season football tickets

Louisiana Tech fans that renew or reserve their 2014 football season tickets by June 5 can add their selfie to the season ticket graphics.
Fans just need to renew their season tickets by the June 5 deadline and send a picture of themselves — commonly known as a “selfie” — while wearing LA Tech apparel to TechTickets@LATech.edu and that picture will be included on a background graphic on the season ticket page.

Funeral service for Mr. Perry Lee Kirkham, age 75 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 15, 2014 at DaySpring Ministry Baptist Church, formerly Southside Baptist Church on 167 South. Officiating the service will be Rev. J.E. Brown and Rev. Drew Spillers. The service is under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Funeral services for Roberta Carolyn Green Hinton “Ro Ro”, age 74, of Ruston, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 16, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Jerry Hilbun, assisted by Rev. Rolly Walker, and Rev. Cathy Brewton. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Memorial Day is approaching and president of Pafford Emergency Medical Services Greg Pafford understands the importance of honoring United States veterans, which is why, two weeks ago, he set up a trip for his good friend Freddie Price to see the Barksdale Air Force Show.
“There’s not very many people that can tell you the types of stories Freddie tells you,” Pafford said. “And when I told him my idea, it put a big smile on his face.”

LPPJ to meet tonight

Police jurors to look at precincts, polling places

Residents in Lincoln Parish may need to check their voting precincts in the coming weeks as the Lincoln Parish Police Jury will be reestablishing the precincts for each election district and redesignating polling places for voters.
According to a packet released by the LPPJ, “An ordinance amending and reenacting section 2-17 of Chapter Two of the ‘Code of Ordinances,’ relating to the election districts and precincts for each such district, will designate and establish the voting precincts for each election district to provide for the effective date of the said ordinance.”

Bikes for Tykes: Locals raise funds for St. Jude

The Village of Choudrant will be filled with little bikes hoping to raise funds for little tykes on Saturday morning.
Reviving a concept from their youth, brother and sister Josh Sanderson and Katie Jordan will be holding a Bike-a-Thon for St. Jude Children’s Hospital beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Choudrant, located at 117 Oak Street in Choudrant.
Children will meet in the church parking lot for registration, then they will ride around the block to raise their funds.

Cub Scouts hold awards banquet

Cub Scouts from Ruston’s Pack 59 recently held their annual Blue and Gold Banquet at the tree houses located at Camp T.L. James.  The Blue and Gold Banquet is the end-of-year graduation ceremony for Cub Scouts where scouts receive their rank awards as well as other special awards they have worked hard to earn.  One such special award is the Arrow of Light Award, which is Cub Scouting’s highest honor. Scouts earning this award have completed a specific set of requirements over a two-year period during their fourth- and fifth-grade years.
