Diapers to benefit Life Choices

For the second year in a row teens from the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana have volunteered their time for Life Choices of North Central Louisiana.
The teens collected 1,721 diapers and $467.90 in donations.
“They really had great attitudes and represented the values of the Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana very well,” Janet Wilson said. “Once again — we were blown away by the support of the community.”
Jeff Miller Jr., teen director, said the drive went very well.

Babies, children, teenagers, young adults and older adults! God’s people — I love all of them! And although I am blessed beyond belief to minister to people of all ages and stages of life, I still love it when I get to hang out with people in their teens and 20s.

Quilt winner announced

The proud winner of the 25th annual Louisiana Chicken Festival 2013 Quilt Raffle was Lauren Dixon, of Ruston. Lauren is the art teacher at the Dubach School.

Joyner Scholarship awarded

Grambling State University junior business management major DeVante Jackson was excited to get news that the Tom Joyner Foundation awarded him a Hercules Scholarship on Sept. 26.
“The scholarship is a blessing to me and a token of appreciation from God,” said Jackson, 20, of Delhi. “This means hard work really does pay off.”

The reconfiguration of the four Ruston elementary schools had many positive benefits, however, it also resulted in some unforeseen challenges.
For example, Cypress Springs Elementary School has seen more car riders than ever before. Unfortunately, Principal Doris Lewis said the school facilities were ill-prepared for this change.

Locals take the stage

Backus, Campbell, Lynch to perform with band on Saturday

Three local musicians are set to perform Sunday at the Shreveport Convention Center.
Ben Backus, Mark Campbell and Steven Lynch will perform with For King and Country, which consists of Joel and Luke Smallbone. The event is being sponsored by The Simple Church and will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Gun range open for practice

Local hunting enthusiasts will have the chance to sight in their hunting rifles beginning today.
Tommy Doss will open the Lincoln Parish Gun Range, located in Simsboro. The facilities will be free to the public from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. today, Oct. 11, Oct. 18, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1.
“We’ve been doing this for two or three years,” Doss said. “It’s just a public service thing we do to let people come sight in their rifles prior to deer hunting season.”

Walk to help Ella Kate

Ella Kate Whitaker is the 3-year-old daughter of Ron and Meredith Whitaker. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on Jan. 22 when she was just 2 years old. She attends Emmanuel Baptist Preschool and Trinity United Methodist Church. She loves dancing, playing outdoors and swimming. She also loves watching her big brothers play baseball and watching her sister cheer for the Ruston High School Bearcats. She is just one of the local children who could be helped if the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is able to find a cure through its efforts.

A Sportsmans’ Paradise

Doors for Ruston’s Annual Gun, Knife and Coin Show will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday in the Ruston Civic Center. The event will feature selling, trading and displaying of guns, knives, scopes, reloads, antique firearms, shooting accessories, jewelry and gold and silver coins. All guns brought in by attendees for trade or sale will be inspected at the door. “American Hoggers” star Krystal “Pistol” Campbell will also be present for a meet and greet from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until noon Sunday.

NCLAC abuzz about ARToberfest in one week

We are abuzz in the office this week, preparing for ARToberfest, our beer-tasting fundraiser, scheduled for Oct. 11 at Ruston’s Historic Fire Station. This year’s event will be a night of clean air, as it’s sponsored by the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living. Marsala Beverage is back again this year as a sponsor as well, providing more than 50 commercial beer varieties, including a handful that are brand new, such as Goose Island’s Sophie.
