Tech adds flavor to home games

Barbecue chicken first up for fans on Saturday’s tailgating menu

Louisiana Tech fans planning to tailgate prior to the Bulldogs home opener against Lamar on Saturday can plan their menu around barbecue chicken and their favorite sides.
Head coach Skip Holtz and the Bulldogs will kickoff against the Cardinals at 6 p.m. that day, but the festivities around Joe Aillet Stadium start much earlier as tailgating continues to grow around Louisiana Tech home games.

Creek eighth graders grab win

Cedar Creek Middle School started out its football season with a solid performance against OCS last Thursday. The eighth-grade team dominated the Eagles 40-0, with quarterback Jace Moss carrying the ball for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Tripp Marcus logged 104 yards and two touchdowns. The two other top ballcarriers were tailbacks Collin Moak with 75 rushing yards and Kasten Furr, pictured above at left, with 65 yards and a touchdown. The other Middle School Cougar teams kept it close on both games (Sixth grade: OCS 8, Cedar Creek 0; Seventh grade: OCS 16, Cedar Creek 6).

Tech bookstore set to hold ‘Back-to-School Blitz’

The Louisiana Tech Barnes and Noble Bookstore will hold a Back-to-School Blitz beginning at 6 p.m. Friday for all Bulldog fans complete with free food and drinks, discounted merchandise and raffles.
From 6-8 p.m., the event will feature a ‘WAC Swap’ where fans will receive a 20 percent discount in exchange for old Western Athletic Conference merchandise. The outdated items will be given away to charity following the event.
All bookstore merchandise is eligible for the 20 percent discount.

Lady Techsters softball adds Doria to coaching staff

Louisiana Tech head coach Mark Montgomery announced last week that he has hired former Centenary star Emerald Doria to his coaching staff.
Doria fills the opening on the staff left by the departure of John Garris, who accepted the first assistant position at Southern University. Garris spent one season in Ruston helping Montgomery and Co. earn the program’s highest finish ever in Western Athletic Conference regular season play.

Tech volleyball team tops UAPB

In its 2013 home opener, Louisiana Tech defeated the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-8) in the team’s second straight-sets victory of the volleyball season Tuesday night at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston.
Tech (2-2, 0-0 Conference-USA) put together a combined .269 attacking percentage over the course of the match with especially impressive showings in the second and third sets when the team hit .450 and .381 respectively on its way to a win over the Lady Lions of UAPB (0-5, 0-0 SWAC).

Support local business during sales tax event

Area hunters and firearm enthusiasts, get ready. The first big take of the season is in sight.
It’s Louisiana’s annual Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday, set for Sept. 6-8.
On those days, guns, ammunition and other kinds of hunting gear and accessories are free from both state and local sales taxes. Retailers say the weekend brings out hundreds — maybe even thousands — of shoppers, and often results in a typical month’s sales occurring in just three days.

Ruston proactively tightens belt

It was bound to happen. After all, when you spend your monetary reserves — your savings — down past your comfort zone, sooner or later, something’s got to give. And, if you’re the city of Ruston, what gives is the wiggle room you used to have in your financial belt.
So, you take a deep breath and draw that belt a notch tighter. If all goes according to plan, Ruston’s Board of Aldermen on Monday will approve a leaner budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

Beth Durrett Lowery

Beth Durrett Lowery beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away at on Thursday, August 29, 2013 following a long battle with Alzheimer disease. As requested, her body was donated to LSU Health Shreveport for the advancement of medical student education. Her remains will eventually be buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Beth's birthplace and family home in Arcadia, Louisiana. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, September 6 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Van Hook home, 2836 Myrtle Street in Arcadia. Mrs.

TOWN OF DUBACH
REGULAR MEETING OF TOWN COUNCIL The Town Council of Dubach, Louisiana met in Regular Session Monday, August 19, 2013 at 6:30 pm at the Town Hall.
Present were Honorable Robert Jensen Mayor, and Council members Vallie Carrico, Robert Colvin, Hattie Graham, Davie Powell, Donna Lewis, Chief Croxton, and Jessica Darden with the Ruston Daily Leader.
Absent: NONE
Citizens attended: Seth Humble and W. L. Rowland
The Meeting opened with Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation by Mayor Jensen.
