Caney Lake Good Sammers

May 22 – 25 found the Caney Lake Good Sammers headed to the Thomas Linge Community Center in Oak Grove. Hosts Pat and Joe Dickson and JoAnn and Richard Taylor invited campers Wednesday evening to begin the camp-out by bringing their sack supper and sharing fellowship around the table.

Lightning strikes again

In 2012, 28 people died nationwide from being struck by lightning. Here in Lincoln Parish, although we haven’t had a fatality due to a lightning strike in several years, residents should be aware of the dangers associated with lightning.
In recent weeks there have been several known lightning strikes, some causing severe property damage and resulting in fire.

‘Burk’ to boost RHS program

For David Michael Burkhalter, being a part of the prestigious East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase later this summer is about more than just displaying his talents.
It’s also about boosting the recognition of the Ruston High School program even more.
Burkhalter will be the second Bearcats’ player in as many summers to be chosen to play in the event that puts the spotlight on upcoming senior prepsters in Syracuse, N.Y., July 30-Aug. 8.

Hall’s grand gala event set Friday

It won’t be just another Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction weekend starting on Friday
in Natchitoches.
The 2013 version will be special.
Extra special.
Highlighting the annual ceremonies in which 11 individuals will receive the state’s ultimate honor in athletics will be the unveiling of a $23 million complex that will house both the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is the home to Super Bowl champions, Olympic gold medalists and Kentucky Derby winners, among its vast collection of legendary figures.
One thing it does not have is someone who caused the Earth to move ... until Saturday night, June 29 in Natchitoches, when a transcendent LSU quarterback officially joins the ranks of state sports greats.
Tommy Hodson made a name for himself on the gridiron as a record-setting quarterback at LSU and Central Lafourche High School. He also spent time in the NFL with four different teams, including the New Orleans Saints.

Carl Frederick Abner (Sarge)

Carl Frederick Abner (Sarge) went to be with the Lord Monday, June 24, 2013. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday June 28, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Carl, born December 23, 1949, in Miami, Florida, was the son of the late Helen and Fred Abner. He attended George Washington Carver High School, Miami-Dade Community College and the University of Miami Graduate School.

Services celebrating the life of Beverly Ruth Daniels Free will be held Friday, June 28, 2013 at 11 :00 am, at New Prospect Baptist Church, Dry Prong, with Bro. Mike Shamblin, Bro. Robbie Poole, Bro. Jack West, and the deacons of New Prospect Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Frazier Cemetery, Prospect, with Bro. Herb Dickerson and Bro. Tommy Free officiating. The family asks that visitation be observed Thursday at the church
from 5:00 p.m. until, and continue Friday, until time of service.

Dr. Joe R. Wilson

Dr. Joe R. Wilson, at the age of 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning, June 22, 2013. The love of his life, Pegi West Wilson, two children and two grandchildren were with him at the time. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2013 in the Chapel at Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. Joe was born in Colfax, LA on April 5, 1923 and grew up in Orange, TX. Joe attended the Naval Academy graduating in the summer of 1944.

Mr. Richard Newton Moore

Mr. Richard Newton Moore, age 87, of Ruston passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Bernice City Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Mr. Moore was born March, 4, 1926 and passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy M. Lawrence. Mr. Moore was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Ruston, the American Chemical Society and the Louisiana Forestry Association.
