NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a Public Hearing will be held to review and consider for action an application for Preliminary Plat for Major Subdivision Approval at the regular meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen to be held at 5:30 p.m., on August 5, 2013, Council Chambers/Courtroom, City Hall, 401 North Trenton Street, Ruston, Louisiana.

Margie Prothro "Meemaw" Colton

Margie Prothro "Meemaw" Colton, age 79 of Birmingham, AL formerly of Ruston, LA passed peacefully on July 15, 2013. She was a Southern Baptist and a member of Clay First Baptist Church. She graduated from Business College in Natchitoches, LA. She worked at Valley Electric, Early Chevrolet and retired in 2007 from Ronnie Ward GMC Toyota Dealership. She was a Notary Public. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Ray Colton; parents, Rev. O.H. and Elva Roe Prothro; sister, Jewell Prothro McElwee.

Teachers learn about small engines

Visitors to the new Ruston High School agricultural sciences building might have noticed a bit of a mess with tiny parts of engines all over the place.
Last week, 17 teachers — some from as far away as Grant Parish — visited Ruston High School to take a class and receive certification in four-stroke engines.
The training, which was sponsored by the Lincoln Parish School Board, included all of the ag science teachers from Lincoln Parish, as well as teachers from Claiborne, East Carroll, Franklin, Ouachita, Union and Grant parishes.

Carson, Brantley to exchange vows

Sarah Carson, of Shreveport, and Wes Brantley, of Ruston, are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Rick and Cindy Carson, of Shreveport. She is the granddaughter of the late Howard Wright, of Lexington, Kent., Carl and Inez Burman, of Lexington, Kent., the late Hardie Carson, of Hodge, and Sadie Carson, of Hodge.

State police respond to wreck

Two trucks collided on Louisiana Highway 33 at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday in front of Rustiques Architectural Antiques. Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office was on scene to help direct traffic, but Louisiana State Police Troop F worked the wreck. Albert Paxton, LSP public information officer, said Robert Williams, 51, of Ruston, was the driver of the Chevrolet and was written a citation for failure to yield. Paxton said it appeared WIlliams pulled off of private property and struck the 1999 Ford Ranger, driven by 57-year-old Janice Hall, of Ruston.

Council selects auditors, passes resolution

The Ruston City Council selected its auditors for the fiscal year ending on Sept. 20, 2013, and also passed a resolution regarded the Louisiana Community Block Grant (LCDBG) Program during its monthly meeting held July 8.
Aldermen passed a motion to select certified public accountant Douglas Brewer, who has been doing the city’s audits, to return to that role for the upcoming audit.
The council did vote to raise Brewer’s pay to $58,750, up from the $58,500 Brewer was paid for the last audit.

Revels, Eley to wed in August ceremony

Elizabeth T. Revels and Nathan Brody Eley, both of Ruston, are happy to announce their engagement and approaching wedding.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Susan Tuten, of Ruston, and Jim and Linda Tuten, of Ruston. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Luttring, Mildred Tuten and the late Joe Tuten.

Elizabeth is a graduate of Ruston High School, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She is currently employed by the City of West Monroe.

Prepare for I-20 eastbound slowdowns

The bad news is that if you’re headed east down Interstate 20 in the near future, prepare for slowdowns and short stoppages.
The good news is that it will make for smoother rides in the future.
Louisiana’s Department of Transportation and Development has started a $11.4 million project, which DOTD Secretary Sherri LeBas said has been planned for about two years, to resurface the eastbound lanes of I-20 from Louisiana Highway 146 to the Ouachita Parish line, a distance of approximately six miles.
