Alan Robertson to join Si during LMCH event

Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home is excited to announce Alan Robertson will join his uncle Si Robertson in the upcoming fundraising event in Ruston on May 9.
All proceeds of the event will benefit the Children’s Home. Alan Robertson and Si Robertson will share the stage as they entertain the crowd with stories of faith, family and their life on television’s Duck Dynasty.

RPD hosts forgery, fraud investigators conference

The Ruston Police Department this week hosted the Louisiana Forgery and Fraud Investigator’s Association annual conference. RPD Capt. Eric Hanna is the 2014 president of the LAFFIA.

Ruston native given LSU athletic award

Louisiana State University College presented its annual “Celebration of Excellence” Spring Awards program on April 1 at The Club on Union Square. University College awarded $64,000 through 55 scholarships, 10 LSU faculty teaching awards and one LSU Advisor of the Year Award
William “Tucker” Smith was awarded the Tiger Athletic Foundation University College Sophomore Award. Smith, a sophomore majoring in Business Administration with a 4.0 GPA, joins an elite group of scholarship recipients. Smith, son of William and Kelly Smith, is a graduate of Cedar Creek School in Ruston.

Blackwell makes cut

Cedar Creek junior Brock Blackwell of Arcadia has been invited by the U.S. Naval Academy to attend its Summer Seminar program.
Blackwell is among a select group of approximately 2,500 men and women from around the nation and abroad to attend the program.
Summer Seminar is a fast-paced leadership experience for rising seniors in high school.  This program helps educate, motivate and prepare selected students who are considering applying for admission to USNA.

Hillcrest celebrates 90 years, hosts AR party

Hillcrest celebrated 90 years! Everyone helped to get ready for our birthday party. Thanks for all the great help. We had many who sent memorabilia to display and many who attended our celebration. We are so glad that you had a part in this very special occasion April 27.
We collected $926.03 to donate to Relay for Life. Mrs. Oakley’s class collected the most money, bringing in $123.90. They were rewarded with Wacky Packs that were donated from Sonic. Thank you, Sonic.

Be safe, share the road

As the days get longer and the weather continues to get prettier, residents are likely to see more motorcycles out on the roads.
So, it seems like perfect timing that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, 833 people were killed in motorcycle crashes in Louisiana over the past 10 years. That is why Louisiana has joined in the effort to raise awareness of this important issue.

But I didn’t ‘mean’ to

A friend of mine always tells me to write something funny and although I know that news is typically a serious matter, I’m going to attempt to appease my friend this week.
Yesterday was a national celebration for mean girls everywhere. It was the 10th anniversary of the movie “Mean Girls,” which, as you may recall was Lindsay Lohan’s big break (this was back in the good old days when Lindsay Lohan was just mean instead of felonious).
As you may recall, the film portrayed Lohan as a sweet and slightly awkward child who “the plastics,” AKA the mean girls, recruit as one of their own.

Shrell, McFarlain to marry in June

Mandi Kamille Shrell, of Ruston, and Michael Anthony McFarlain, of Sulphur, are pleased to announce their engagement and approaching wedding.

Mandi is the daughter of Jim and Sharon Shrell, of Ruston. She is the granddaughter of Bill and Rita Porter, of Ruston, Harold and Helen Shrell, of Ruston, and the late Doris Shrell.

Michael is the son of Brad and Kempa McFarlain, of Sulphur. He is the grandson of the late Faye Veal and Jack Veal, of Sulphur, and the late Nolan and late Pauline McFarlain.

Kaufman, Seal to wed

Paul and Carla Kaufman, of Benbrook, Texas, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching wedding of their daughter Stephanie Ann Kaufman to Kenneth Loy Seal, of Ruston.

Stephanie is the granddaughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Kaufman and William and Martha Akers, of Benbrook, Texas.

Kenneth is the son of Loy and Deborah Seal, of Ruston. He is the grandson of the late Haskell and Delores Seal, the late Christine Byrd Hammack and Jack Hammack, of Hattiesburg, Miss.
