Louisiana Tech University enjoyed an overall successful year in athletics for the just completed 2012-13 season.
Both on and off of it.
Thirty-five student athletes from nine different sports received degrees during the university’s spring commencement exercises held at the Thomas Assembly Center last weekend.
A dozen players on the Bulldogs’ nine-game winning football team earned their degrees in various fields.

Hunter Antley (left photo) of Choudrant High and Sam Phillips of Ruston High were recently selected to the first unit of the 2013 composite Louisiana High School Athletic Association All-Academic baseball team. Antley, a utility player, and catcher Phillips were Lincoln Parish’s only representatives on the prestigious squad whose members were nominated by administrators/coaches at their schools.

Millsap honored by state

Former Louisiana Tech basketball great Paul Millsap was a recent recipient of the Bob Pettit Award, given to Louisiana’s professional Player of the Year, chosen by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC).
Now in his seventh year in the NBA, all with the Utah Jazz, the Bulldog Hall of Famer averaged 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this past season while starting all 78 games. Millsap registered 15 double-double games and had single game highs of 34 points, 15 rebounds and five steals.

Techsters’ Starkova advances

SUMTER, S.C. — With three consecutive wins in the qualifying rounds, Louisiana Tech University freshman Alexandra Starkova advanced to the main draw of the ITF Palmetto Pro Open at the Palmetto Pro Center.
The Madrid, Spain, native received a bye in the first round before cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kayla Price (USA).
Starkova proved dominant once again when she defeated Jemileth Aguilar (Venezuela) 6-4, 6-0.

GSU football: ‘Kansas City here we come’

KANSAS CITY— Arrowhead Stadium will play host to the 2013 Missouri Classic football game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Lincoln University Blue Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, marking consecutive year No. 13 that Arrowhead will host at least one NCAA football game in the fall.
Grambling State, the game’s visiting team, is one of the most successful historically black universities in NCAA Division I athletics and enters the season just two years removed from its last Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship in 2011.

Reverend Woodrow Wilson Reeder Jr

Funeral services for Reverend Woodrow Wilson Reeder Jr., 69 of Bernice, LA., will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Crestview Baptist Church in Farmerville. Officiating the service will be Rev. Connie Ward, Rev. Wayne Whiteside, Rev. Barry Joyner, and Rev. Charles Malone. Interment will follow in Bernice City cemetery under direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Farmerville. Mr. Reeder was born on May 17, 1944 in Buffalo, New York and passed away on May 20, 2013 in Farmerville, LA.
