Peach Festival tennis tourney: 104 participants

Traditionally, the tennis tournament held in conjunction with the Louisiana Peach Festival has a large turnout.
It was no different this time, as 104 participants took part in the 2013 edition that was held at the Louisiana Tech University courts last weekend.
Directed by Lynne Jones, the tourney featured competition in nine different divisions: mixed doubles 5.5, mixed doubles 6.0-6.5, mixed doubles 7.5, women’s doubles 6.5 and below, women’s doubles 7.0, women’s doubles 7.0 and above, men’s doubles 6.5 and below, men’s doubles 7.0-8.0 and men’s open.

Ex-GSU star to join Hall of Fame

Jimmy Jones will join his Lincoln Parish neighbors in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.
And the former Grambling State University basketball star will have plenty of company when he and 10 other individuals comprise the 2013 induction class at the Natchitoches Events Center on Saturday.

Benefits of eating a meal together

Eating healthy can be a challenge if you live alone. Part of the pleasure of eating is to have someone to share the meal, compliment the cook or help with the preparation. I really appreciate help with the clean up after the meal. Here are a few tips that may make meal time a pleasure.
Share your meals. Make a date with people you enjoy — grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Share a meal on a rotating bases with one of these loved ones.

Lifetime of headaches?

I have had migraines since I was 2 years old.
Every time I say that and I can see the person I’m talking to, a wince of pain crosses their face. I can understand why. Having had a lifetime of migraines, the idea of a 2-year-old having a migraine is horrifying. If nothing else, I feel blessed that I can’t remember that.
However, I can remember the migraines that made me miss school for a week at a time during high school. And the ones that on two separate occasions resulted in a 24-hour hospital stay.

Funeral services will be held for Robert F. Shirey, 83, at the Weldon Baptist Church, 1610 Weldon Church Road, Bernice on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hoffman, officiating. Interment will follow at the Weldon Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church beginning at 1:00 p.m. just prior to the service. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 405 E. 5th St., Homer, LA 71040. Mr. Shirey was born Oct. 15, 1929 in the Weldon Community to Thomas Clifford Shirey and Myra Lee Shirey.

Mrs. Patrician Anne Riser Duncan

A memorial service for Mrs. Patrician Anne Riser Duncan will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Owens Memorial Chapel. Officiating the service will be Rev. Larry Emory. Burial will follow in Riser Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Duncan was born July 16, 1942 in Mobile, AL and died June 23, 2013 in Ruston. She worked for nearly 25 years for Wayerheuser in the accounts department. In her spare time, Mrs. Duncan enjoyed gardening, fishing and loved her dogs. Mrs.

Funeral services for Mrs. Joan Van Veckhoven, age 79, of Dubach, LA will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Bill Reid and Rev. Todd Free. Interment will follow at Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Mrs. Van Veckhoven was born June 12, 1934 in Gordon, TX and passed away June 24, 2013 in Dubach, LA, following a brief illness. Mrs. Van Veckhoven was born and raised in Gordon, TX.

Miss Dixie Gem Peach crowned

The Peach Fest came to a close with the crowning of Angela Cassels, of West Monroe, as the 63rd Miss Dixie Gem Peach. Also crowned for the Miss’ Division were — Miss Spirit of Ruston Anna Blake; first runner up Elisa Aviles; and second runner up Lindsay King.
Meagan Crews was crowned Miss Dixie Gem Peach Outstanding Teen. Others crowned in the Teen division of the pageant were Miss Spirit of Ruston Natalie Nicholson; first runner up Madalyn Bell; and second runner up Madelynn Skipper.
