Question: How does a regular person make it these days? With everything costing so much, it is really so hard to save any money. Do only rich people get to retire one day?
Answer: In addressing the answer to this question, last week I promised to examine more closely a strategy nicknamed “Being your own banker.”
The reason we need a strategy like this is that otherwise, all the forces are working against us. It is obviously difficult or distasteful for most people to save money (the national savings rate currently hovers around 0 percent). And it is apparently easy for people to borrow money — and the vast majority pays it back on time and in full.

Grambling Legends induct 12

The Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame inducted a 12-member clas Saturday at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on the Grambling State University campus.
That 2013 induction class included former NFL standouts Frank Cornish and Woodrow Peoples, basketball All-American Rex Tippit and record-breaking collegiate quarterback Bruce Eugene among others.

Mannings all about football at academy

THIBODAUX (AP) — Peyton and Eli Manning took some time during their passing academy for youngsters this week to talk about facing off against one another again this season when the Denver Broncos play the New York Giants on Sept. 15.
The Houma Courier reported that Peyton, who is entering his 16th NFL season and second with Denver, said he remembers little from the two previous games against Eli except for a moment during the National Anthem.

Forward Erik McCree transfers to Tech

Louisiana Tech head men’s basketball coach Michael White has announced that forward Erik McCree has transferred from Murray State and joined the Bulldog basketball team.
“Erik has a tremendous upside as a player,” said White. “His versatility is his calling card.
“He possesses forward size with a guard skill set.”

CASA receives grant

Organization strengthens advocacy for foster care

Recently, National CASA and Sen. Mary Landrieu joined Louisiana CASA Association (LACASA) to announce a federal grant to support recruitment and awareness of the need for CASA volunteers to advocate on behalf of youth in foster care.
Funds from the grant will support recruitment through partnerships with local media so more children in Louisiana’s foster care system can be served by CASA volunteers.
