’Bama Black Belt not about karate

Pam Swanner gets calls like this all the time…“Is this where I sign up for a karate class?”
Swanner, Project Director for Alabama Black Belt Adventures, is accustomed to such calls. In the gracious and genteel manner of the southern lady she is, Swanner explains that her organization has nothing to do with, according to Webster, “karate — the Japanese system of unarmed self-defense that stresses efficiently struck blows.” The Black Belt Adventures she promotes is something different and its participants are usually appropriately armed; you don’t do hand-to-hand combat with a deer, turkey, hog or quail.

Explaining the Christian holy season

B1-2.jpg

About one-third of the planet, or roughly 2.1 billion people, are Christians. Each spring, this large subset of the population celebrates the religious miracle that is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Reaffirming one’s faith

Irby, Marna.jpg

Good news. Spring is here and today is Easter. Plenty to celebrate, right?
But I have another cause for celebration. I just heard that CBS took a poll and found that 86 percent of Americans bothered to express strong feelings about leaving “In God We Trust” on our money and as a statement as to who we are — a Christian nation. That leaves 14 percent who either were opposed or cast no opinion.
