City seeks citizens’ opinions

Respondents asked to rank services, departments, downtown and quality-of-life issues

The city of Ruston wants to hear from its citizens.
The city has a new 19-question online public opinion survey seeking input on city services, downtown, active transportation and recycling. The survey is available on the city’s website, www.ruston.org, as well as on Facebook and Instagram.
Hard copies can be picked up at the mayor’s office on the second floor of City Hall, or mailed to residents who request them, city Communications Director Kourtney Keim said Monday.

Back-to-School event draws crowd

Approximately 200 local residents participated in the first Nada Houston Back-to-School Health Extravaganza held Saturday at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center. The participants could receive free sports physicals, school supplies and backpacks, as well as information from various vendors on how to “Live Healthy.” The event was hosted by Sister 2 Sister, Inc. and Quality Care at Home, LLC.

Finding ethics through conversation

This year we have heard a lot of talk about ethics. We hear mostly about government ethics committees, ethical or unethical people in business, medicine, education, churches. My own definition was a bit limited: An ethical person is honest and of good character. But when thinking about ethics, we also remind ourselves of our morals. They are definitely intertwined but different. I found an interesting article on the internet that I want to share with you.

Tech bowling signee named All-American

The accolades continue to roll in for Louisiana Tech bowling team signee Ashley Channell, who was named one of five female Dexter High School All-Americans.
Channell, who finished in fifth place at the United States High School Championships, had the highest average in the state of Tennessee at 220.5 and led her school to a fourth consecutive state championship.

Ruston native joins Southland staff

FRISCO, Texas — The Southland Conference has announced veteran athletic administrator Thomas Samuel as its assistant commissioner of compliance services.
Thomas, originally from Ruston, will coordinate the conference’s compliance program, including interpreting NCAA legislation for the league’s 13 member institutions and working as a liaison with the NCAA Membership Services staff.
“We’re very pleased to have Thomas join the Southland office team, and look forward to his contributions to the league membership,” Burnett said.

RPAR fall sports registration underway

Fall registration for Ruston Parks and Recreation Department programs has stasrted. Youth programs include tackle and flag football, soccer (under 4, under 5, under 6, under 8 and under 10) and the annual Punt, Pass & Kick Competition. Adult programs incldue softball and men’s 7-on-7 flag football. Register online at www.ruston.org/registration for both soccer and flag football. Because a birth certificate and height and weight measurements are required for tackle football, applicants for that program must register at the RPAR office on James Street.

LTAC sets fundraising record

The Louisiana Tech Athletic Club finished the 2016-17 fiscal year with a record amount in dollars raised, surpassing $1.5 million for the first time ever.
This is a nearly 20 percent increase from the previous fiscal year and a 50 percent increase over the past four years. The final tally of $1,511,410 represents the outstanding support from Louisiana Tech alumni and friends.

It’s 'parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme' time

Back in the day, Simon and Garfunkel sang about “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,” but the hit song I would record goes like this:
Basil, dill and par-se-ley,Cilantro, mint and rosemary,
These are the best herbs for me,
Tra- la- la- la- lee!
Yes, I am a big fan of cooking with herbs and a staunch believer in growing your own herbs for better quality, economy and convenience. I have never had much luck with or use for the sage that Simon and Garfunkel sang about, but I do like to have a supply of basil, dill, parsley, cilantro, mint and rosemary in my garden.

Sloan stood out in class, on field

Even after receiving her degree in communication arts and design, the honors keep rolling in for former Louisiana Tech soccer standout Kathryn Sloan.
The latest came earlier this month when the Kansas City, Missouri, native was chosen as the recipient of the 2016-17 Conference USA Scholar Athlete Award for women’s soccer.
C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives selected the Scholar Athlete of the Year awards that are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport based on academic achievement, athletic achievement and service.
