GSU softball tops JSU

GRAMBLING — After dropping the first two games in a series with Jackson State University, the Grambling State University Lady Tigers dug deep and pulled out a win on Monday afternoon.
GSU defeated JSU 8-3 to close out the Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
With the win, Grambling moves to 11-21 on the season and 1-5 in SWAC play. The visiting Lady Tigers drop to 9-22 and 2-4 in league play.

Diamond ’Dogs to host ULM tonight

Following a four-game road swing, Louisiana Tech returns back to the Love Shack for a midweek battle with a familiar foe just down Interstate 20 in the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
First pitch between Louisiana Tech and ULM is set for 6 p.m. today at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park and will be the first of two meetings this season between the Bulldogs and the Warhawks.
Louisiana Tech is coming off of a three-game set at Charlotte which concluded with the Diamond ’Dogs splitting a Saturday doubleheader with the 49ers.

Favorite season finally arrives

This is my favorite time of year. The birds are singing, the trees are greening up and the daffodils along the interstate have bloomed. Already I have noticed busy bees in my garden. The North Central Louisiana Master Gardeners have predictably been as busy as bees as well. For many months they have been working in the greenhouses at Louisiana Tech growing beautiful plants for you to buy at their annual Spring Plant Sale.

Tech, GSU players await NFL Draft

As March Madness winds down, some of our area collegiate football players are preparing for the next phase of the gridiron careers — the possibility of playing pro football.
The Ruston Daily Leader is excited about this year’s crop of potential pros and we are already counting down the days until the first round of the NFL draft begins on April 27.
While it doesn’t appear Lincoln Parish will have a first-round selection as we did last year in Louisiana Tech’s Vernon Butler, there is the chance of a second-day (second or third round) pick in Bulldogs receiver Carlos Henderson.

Funeral services for Alva A. “Sug” Shaw, age 83 of Ruston will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with Bro. Greg Tipton officiating. Burial will follow in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Dubach, LA under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
Sug was born October 3, 1933 in Vernon, LA and passed away peacefully March 26, 2017 at Alpine Guest Care in Ruston, LA.
