Parish seeks students for enhanced calendar program

At the end of last school year, 64 percent of newly graduated second-graders at Ruston’s Glen View Elementary School were performing at or above grade-level expectations in reading.
Sixty-three percent were at or above proficiency in math.
Then came summer break.
As the same students began their third-grade year at Cypress Springs Elementary — the school into which Glen View feeds — only 31 percent were performing at or above where they should have been.

Attend school calendar forum

When Lincoln Parish school officials began preliminary talks with the school board about the idea of an enhanced school calendar pilot program, school Superitnendent Mike Milstead spoke about the need to combat the “summer slump.”

The summer slump, sometimes called the summer “learning loss” or “summer regression,” is the time between the traditional end of school in May and the beginning of the new term in August.

Stay prepared for Old Man Winter's wrath

Like many people, a rare snowfall in Lincoln Parish is something in which I take delight.
A rare ice storm is a completely different story.
It appears Old Man Winter might be preparing to write a new chapter in the Piney Hills Weather Record Book. According to Lincoln Parish Director of Homeland Security Kip Franklin, there is a good chance of some form of a wintery mix of precipitation late Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Lincoln Prep earns grant funds

Lincoln Preparatory School recently received $500 for participating in the Adolescent Pre-Diabetes Prevention Program. Richland Parish Hospital partners with West Feliciana Parish Hospital and Christus Health Central Louisiana to provide personnel and programming help. More than 20 students were screened during the Fall 2017 semester. The screening measured height, weight and blood pressure.

Strangest deer-hunting story ever

Lincoln Prep sweeps past Plain Dealing

PLAIN DEALING — Lincoln Preparatory School’s varsity teams took a pair of District 1-1A road wins Friday night at Plain Dealing.
The Lady Panthers climbed to 9-6 overall and 5-0 in district play with a 57-47 win over the Lions with Alexia Perkins leading the way with 18 points and 13 rebounds long with four steals and three blocked shots.
