City hit with two power outages

in

A pair of unrelated power outages left much of north Ruston and downtown without electricity part of the day Thursday.
The first outage occurred about 10 a.m. near the East Kentucky Avenue bridge when a cross arm on an electric utility pole belonging to Entergy broke and fell across some of the city’s above-ground lines, Public Works Director Darrell Caraway said.
The outage affected more than 1,000 customers, he said. Power was restored shortly after noon.

Living on Lake D’Arbonne for seven years, Hopkins had driven past a site thousands of times where the Union Parish Police Jury put trash dumpsters on North Spillway Road. That morning, all five dumpsters were full, which she said was not uncommon. That trash had spilled out of the dumpsters onto the ground just off the roadway, she said, wasn’t uncommon either.
“I finally said this is enough,” Hopkins said.

Parish park improvements to benefit community

in
Hawley, Heather.jpg

A few weeks ago, my husband and I took a trip to Lincoln Parish Park to have a picnic by the lake. We were happy to see that it was back in its beautiful state full of water with the wildlife happily settled on its shores.
Just a few months before our trip, the drive around the park was not as nice a sight as it was that day.
Not because of any misdoing on the part of the park’s staff, in fact it was a benefit to the park and the people of Lincoln Parish.
This benefit, as readers well know, was due to the selling of lake water to local oil companies — 30 million gallons to be exact.

Donate to GSU $1 million fundraiser

Grambling State University made a tough decision not to increase student fees after the University of Louisiana System executive committee approved fee changes to its nine universities.
GSU president Rick Gallot said he decided to opt out of the fee increases saying GSU students should not bear additional financial responsibility for their education.
While this is good news for the students not wanting to pay more in fees, GSU admits it will need to find additional revenue through other avenues.
