How to treat teens living with depression

Adolescence is a time of many challenges. Developing bodies and social and academic stresses can be difficult.
Major depression in your teenagers can be serious.
If left untreated, depression can lead to devastating consequences. Ongoing problems in school, at home and with friends; the loss of critical developmental years; increased risk for substance abuse; involvement with the juvenile justice system; and suicide can be the results.
It is important to seek a health care provider who will provide coping alternatives and self-soothing strategies as ways to help your teenager.

Louisiana Legislature: An epic failure in learning

Now that we’ve had a little more time to think about it, maybe we should ask state Rep. Rob Shadoin’s question anew: “Did we not learn anything in the last 60 days?”
The Ruston lawmaker’s query came two days after the Legislature ended a 60-day fiscal session in June without adopting an operating budget, a construction budget or the financing bill to pay for the projects.
Last-minute attempts at compromise failed after Republican House leadership balked, setting up a potential second go-round of the exact same arguments that led to the original stalemate.

Demand TOPS reform

Louisiana Tech University taught 4,319 Taylor Opportunity Program for Students recipients while Grambling State University taught 157 during the 2016-17 school year, according to data from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance.
That is 4,476 Louisiana students who received state scholarships to attend one of the Louisiana’s public colleges or universities. Those students chose a Lincoln Parish institution to further their education even after the Legislature decided not to fully fund TOPS this past school year.

Sallie Lisette Colvin Aulds, 96, of Ruston passed away on July 16, 2017. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 4 PM at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Jim Davis, minister of Ruston Church of Christ, will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 5-7 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Sallie was born on March 21, 1921 to Thomas Clay and Eva White Colvin. She was a graduate of Ruston High School, a member of the Ruston Church of Christ, and AT&T Pioneers.

Services for June Ferrington, 83, of Ruston, LA will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 11:00AM at the First Baptist Church of Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 AM.

WILLIAM L. (BILL) HART

William L. (Bill) Hart, a life long resident of Ruston, Louisiana passed away on July 15, 2017, peacefully at LSU Medical Center with his wife, Beth, and son, Christopher, by his side. Bill was an outstanding creative designer and artist that made his livelihood designing and manufacturing custom light fixtures, furniture, and decorative accessories. He founded Hart Country Shop and later became the owner of Hart Associates while serving as the head designer.

ENA MARGARET JONES MARTIN

Ena Margaret Jones Martin passed away peacefully on Sunday July, 16, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. A funeral service will be held at Burkhalter Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church, Ruston, LA on Wednesday July 19, 2017 at 11:00 am followed by a private burial. Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the church prior to the service. Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Ena Margaret Martin was born in Arcadia, LA on July 7, 1931. Her parents, Alfred and Jewel Davis Jones, were from pioneering families of Bienville Parish.
