Local dentist acquitted of insider trading with Shaw Group

in

BATON ROUGE — A Ruston dentist whose brother-in-law worked at the Shaw Group in 2012 was acquitted Thursday on federal insider trading charges relating to the announcement that year that Shaw was being acquired by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. for $3 billion.
Federal prosecutors had alleged that Jesse H. Roberts III reaped a $700,000 profit from confidential information allegedly provided by his brother-in-law, Scott David Zeringue.
Roberts was found not guilty on one count each of securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud.
He did not testify in his own defense.

Millage vote is right move

On Tuesday, members of the Lincoln Parish Policy Jury voted to kill an increase in general alimony millages, or funds gathered from property tax.

Last year, the jury voted to make the rates 1.68 mills inside the city of Ruston and 3.37 mills outside the city limits.

By keeping these rates and not rolling them forward to their full extent, 1.82 mills inside Ruston city limits and 3.65 mills outside the city limits — an option that was on the table — jurors saved residents approximately $105,450.

Alzheimer's disease should not be a stigma

in
Boatright, T. Scott 14.jpg

It’s in the numbers. The law of averages always catches up to us.
That includes celebrity deaths. The older we get, the more likely it is that we’ve felt the loss of someone we admired from afar for whatever reason.
It happened again for me last week with the passing of Glen Campbell after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
I loved Glen Campbell’s music. The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, a variety show that ran from 1969-72, was must-see TV in my house growing up.

Take the guesswork out of choosing investments

in
Conville, Bobby 2014.jpg

Asset allocation is a strategy that can help take the guesswork out of choosing investments for your portfolio. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket, you spread your eggs (dollars) among a variety of baskets (stocks, bonds, and cash). The baskets can be further divided within each type of investment.

Retirement income — when will I spend it?

in
Moore, Byron 2015.jpg

Question: I read somewhere that on average I need 70 percent of my working income in retirement. Does that sound about right?
Answer: Last week we began examining this issue by identifying four bases you need to cover in your planning for retirement income: you need contentment for emotional health, a baseline budget for financial health, and a budget for both expected big stuff and unexpected bad stuff to make sure neither causes your financial house to collapse on your head.

Visit to Quebec, Miss., stirs old memories

in
081317 RED WOLF.jpg

On our way home from a weekend getaway to Mississippi, my wife and I exited Interstate 20 for a stop in Tallulah. As we approached the on-ramp to get back on the interstate, a sign abruptly changed our plan. That particular on-ramp was closed, necessitating an alternate route west toward home.
Highway 80 parallels the interstate and we proceeded along the highway with cotton and soy bean fields stretching for thousands of acres on either side of the road, making for an impromptu but enjoyable side trip.
