Giving back in a big way

Tenth annual Family Day in the Park benefits schoolchildren

Area schoolchildren flocked to the Greenwood Recreational Center for the 10th, and final, school supply giveaway known as the Joy Tellis Cooper Foundation’s Family Day in the Park.
But that doesn’t mean that Cooper, a former Ruston resident who has lived in Atlanta the past 10 years, plans on easing up on giving back to her hometown.

RHS Prep Week under way

Prep Week for Ruston High School started this morning with seniors reporting.
Students should report to the school auditorium on their designated day between 8:30 and 11 a.m. to pay debts from last year, pay 2013-14 homeroom fees ($20) and to obtain their new class schedules.
The $20 homeroom fee must be paid during Prep Week by all students who wish to receive a schedule.
Juniors should report on Tuesday, sophomores on Wednesday and freshmen on Thursday.
On Aug. 16 freshmen only will report to the RHS auditorium for a half day of school.

‘Rock Around the Clock’

Music and pop culture from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s will be in the spotlight when Piney Hills Harmony Chorus and Elvis tribute artist Todd C. Martin combine their talents again in “Rock Around the Clock.”
Curtain time is 7 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Jack Howard Theatre at the Monroe Civic Center.
The Ruston-based Sweet Adelines chorus and Martin, a Monroe attorney, first performed “Rock Around the Clock” in 2012 at the Dixie Center for the Performing Arts.

School days bring a need for awareness

The pleasures of summer ­— no school, plenty of family time, camps and trips, swimming and sleepovers — will be ending soon, and our schools will be preparing for the another year. Regardless of their ages, each student will face new challenges in the upcoming academic year. They may be graduating into a new school altogether, from elementary to I.A. Lewis, or from junior high to high school. They may be facing a whole new level of study, from basic math to algebra, or physical science to chemistry.

Community service starts at home

We’ve seen the community help others in the past, and last week was no different as more thoughtful residents of Ruston stepped up to provide helpful services for residents who live in our community.
We learned that members of Trinity United Methodist Church, held their annual Weekend of the Cross and helped Ruston’s elderly citizens have better and easier lives by helping paint their houses, repair broken roofs and build wheelchair ramps, among other services.
