Funeral services for Maurine Harris Broome Sleeth, age 92, of Ruston will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Dale Oden. Interment will follow at Pecan Grove Cemetery near Hilly under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Grambling State University Theatre students are set to present F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary tale “The Great Gatsby,” as adapted to the stage by Simon Levy, beginning today at the Floyd L. Sandle Theatre, located in the Conrad Hutchinson Performing Arts Center.

Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of stories about women fulfilling nontraditional roles in honor of Women’s History Month.
Susie Hogg stares at the short piece of 1-by-8-foot lumber laying on the open tailgate of her white pick-up truck. A light sprinkling of fine sawdust covers the backs of her hands.
She picks up her circular saw, placing the edge of its jagged-toothed round blade on a pencil line she drew on the board. A squeeze of the trigger and the blade squeals through the plank, spraying more sawdust on the truck, Hogg and everything within several feet.

Wynne spells her way to the top

Cedar Creek student wins regional spelling bee

Cedar Creek eighth grader Mary Wynne is the best speller around. She won the Northwest Louisiana Regional Spelling Bee competition in the University Center at LSU-Shreveport on March 8, and will compete in the national competition in Washington D.C. on May 25.
“I don’t get nervous — whether it’s five, 50, 500 or 5 million people — I’ll be the same,” Mary said.
Perhaps it was those nerves of steel that helped Mary to make it through all 88 rounds. And the competition was steep.

Bulldogs to host NIT contest

Tech to square off against Iona at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the TAC

Louisiana Tech was given a No. 3 seed in the National Invitational Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Iona inside the Thomas Assembly Center at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The brackets for the NCAA and NIT tournament.
It marks the second straight year that the Bulldogs earned an automatic bid into the NIT by finishing first in their conference. This will also be only the fourth time that Tech was hosted an NIT game, the last one coming in 2002.
