Funeral services for JoAnn Simmons Cardwell, age 85, of Ruston, LA will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Ruston. Officiating the service will be Dr. Chris Craig. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Tech announces winter quarter grads

Louisiana Tech’s winter quarter commencement exercises were held Saturday, with diplomas awarded to 328 graduates.
Commencement marked the close of winter quarter activities at the university, with spring quarter classes to begin March 12.
Local and area graduates were:
Bernice: Amanda Kay Bedoit, master of arts in teaching; Tiffany Aycock Cooper, bachelor of science early/elementary education grades pk-3; Laurie M. Graves, bachelor of arts.
Bienville: Bethany Paige Brown, associate of science nursing.

Hollingsworth not seeking re-election

Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth will not seek re-election this fall.
“I am making my decision public at this time so that anyone who is considering running for this position will have ample time to prepare a campaign for the fall,” Hollingsworth said in a prepared statement released to the Leader this morning.

Electrical shortage causes fire

The Ruston Fire Department responded to a car fire at approximately 9:40 a.m. Monday on Mayberry Street. They responded with eight personnel in four units — Rescue 1, Engine 11, Engine 13 and Command 1.
Eric Brazzel, public education officer with RFD, said their investigation revealed an electrical short under the hood of the car caused the fire. The car sustained moderated damage and was a total loss.

Ruston board approves new code revisions

Development in Ruston became a little easier Monday night when the board of alderman approved almost 60 revisions to the city’s zoning ordinance.
All of the changes lessen the constraints of regulations that govern how the city develops.
“Relaxing these restrictions makes the public aware that these laws are not set up to hinder progress. These laws are set up to promote progress,” Alderman Elmore Mayfield said.

Capers rises from humble beginnings

Joseph Capers, of Grambling, has had a diverse journey since his humble beginnings in Princeton in Bossier Parish.
The son of a rural minister, Capers was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Shreveport at an early age so he could take advantage of a better education.
“I loved learning and I loved helping people, and I wanted to do as much of those two things as I could,” Capers said.

Isiah Buggs (20) led the way with nine points Monday night, but it wasn’t enough as 12th-seeded Ruston High was knocked out of the Class 5A boys’ prep playoffs with a 48-37 loss at L.W. Higgins in New Orleans.

Grambling Lab reschedules

Head coach Antonio Hudson (pointing) will have to wait an extra day to guide his team in second-round Class 1A playoff action. White Castle could not travel today due to icy road conditions in parts of the state, so the game between the schools has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Frederick Hobdy Assembly Center on the GSU campus. In other action tonight, Simsboro is slated to play host to Centerville at 6 p.m., Choudrant is set to play at Hosanna Christian at 6 p.m. and New Living Word is slated to play host to Phoenix at 7 p.m.
