Peterson trade win-win move

Addition by subtraction. It all added up for the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
The Saints traded future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson to the Cardinals last week, and days later running backs from both teams had their best games so far this young season.
Peterson, a seven-time Pro Bowler who had only days to try and pick up Arizona’s offensive system, finished his game with 26 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his debut with the Cardinals.
Meanwhile in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, the Saints’ Mark Ingram II and rookie Alvin Kamara ran wild.

Start planting 'native plants' for our ecosystem

If you spend any time gardening you have likely heard the term “native plant,” a buzzword in gardening circles. Finding a single clear-cut definition for native plant is difficult. Therefore, I made my own derived from various sources.
According to me, a native plant grows in a particular area or ecosystem without human intervention and grew there before Europeans settled the area.
With this tentative definition, we need to decide why natives are important to our ecosystem.

Congratulations to GSU’s ‘Last Chance’ duo

The Ruston Daily Leader congratulates a pair of Grambling State University defenders who have made the most of their “last chances” at playing collegiate football.
On July 29, 2016, entertainment company Netflix produced and released the first season of “Last Chance U,” a series that focused on all aspects of the East Mississippi Community College football team that won three Junior College National Championship titles over five years.

Grambling State theatre presents ‘Flyin’ West’

Beginning on Tuesday, the Grambling State University Theatre will present “Flyin’ West,” by Pearl Cleage in the Recital Hall, located in the Conrad Hutchinson Performing Arts Center.
“Fleeing the South to avoid oppression and racism after being freed, four black women find refuge on their own land of Nicodemus, Kansas,” said Mary Crook, associate professor of stage and theatre management in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at GSU. “Between the harsh winters to the brutal abuse, Cleage portrays each characters struggles to find their own freedom.”

Tech engineering program named most affordable

Louisiana Tech University’s Master of Science in Engineering and Technology Management program has earned the University accolades, both as one of the most affordable online degree programs in the United States and as one of the best value programs.
The SR Education Group ranked Louisiana Tech fourth in its rankings of “2018 Most Affordable Online Colleges” and in its rankings of “2018 Top Online Colleges for Value” in the master’s degree in engineering management category.

Parish continues to help Puerto Rico

Franklin: Can’t say enough about the generosity of parish

In the past two weeks, the people of Lincoln Parish were asked to help Governor Jon Bel Edward fulfill his promise to the mayor of Puerto Rico for aid.
They did not disappoint.
“I can’t say enough about the generosity shown by Lincoln Parish for the Puerto Rican Disaster Relief Drive. I reported last Wednesday, which was the first pickup date, that a total of five large pallets of supplies were picked by the Louisiana National Guard,” Kip Franklin, director of the Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said.

Hooshang’s ‘Moonlight Runner’ in ‘Art Comes Alive’

An equine painting ("Moonlight Runner" at right) by Ruston resident Hooshang Khorasani is on display in Cincinnati at “Art Comes Alive,” an annual fine art contest and exhibit that features artists from across North America.
Dubbed as the “Academy Awards for Artists,” ACA connects artists and art industry leaders from across the country. A panel of 22 jurors selected the paintings that will be on exhibit from Oct. 9 through Nov. 30. Approximately 200 artworks were selected from more than 2,000 entries.

Candlelight vigil: We do this in remembrance

On Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center, we will gather to remember.
We do this every year. In many ways, DART’s Candlelight Vigil is the most important thing we do.
We call out the name of every person we know in our community who has lost his or her life to domestic violence. We light candles. We have a moment of silence. And we pray.

Tech volleyball falls in 3-1 loss at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17) decision to Marshall on Sunday afternoon from the Cam Henderson Center.
The Lady Techsters (6-15, 1-6 Conference USA) were led in the contest by senior Marta Monne, who once again, notched double-digit kills with 13, while adding nine digs. Rookie Gina Cortesi also provided solid play, contributing nine kills, 10 digs and a trio of blocks.
