Bulldogs get a ‘reality check’

“The players discovered that training camp isn’t easy and it isn’t supposed to be easy,” said first-year head coach Derek Dooley following an afternoon session held under temperatures that hovered around 95 at the start and probably seemed like triple digits with the vintage north Louisiana humidity. “There’s a big difference in being in shape, to being in good condition, to being in football condition.

Chief seeks tax to improve rating, safety

“This is not just about insurance rates,” Ford said. “This is about safety.”
To hire the necessary firefighters, Ford will ask Lincoln Parish residents to pass a 4-mill, 10-year property tax. The millage would raise about $440,000 a year.
Ford is quick to point out the tax will not be used to replace any volunteers. He said volunteers are what make the department the quality organization it is today. However, having more full-time firefighters would enable the department to eventually take over rescue runs in the parish.

Moving into adulthood

Fresh out of college, I learned to take full accountability for myself in order to finally make the leap to adulthood. I got a job and moved to a house because those seemed like the obvious steps to take.
But no matter how many business classes I have taken or how many hours of journalism homework I have done, nothing could prepare me for the real world but my own personal experiences and a big dose of determination. The real world happens to be filled with big responsibilities, new job tasks and angry landlords.

Undergrads get rare opportunity

Dobbins leads the research in such a way that outcomes are generally fixed, she said, because she wants the students she works with to have reportable data and use those reports in conferences. One such opportunity comes up in spring 2008, when a traveling conference will be held in New Orleans. Dobbins said she was looking forward to having her JFAP Outreach Program students take part.
Dobbins and Moore were pouring over data Thursday morning when Dobbins’ noted that Moore had gotten close to coating the molecule as desired.

Tax holiday should include parish, city

In addition to the state sales tax being waived by virtue of Act 244 of the 2007 Louisiana Legislative Session, these benevolent merchants also waived local sales tax, in effect paying the tax themselves so shoppers would not have to pay any sales tax.
Pam Flowers, one of the co-owners of Sisters Too, expressed the sentiment felt by most of the merchants who added their participation to the state holiday when she said she just wanted to give customers a chance to save a little more money.

Show support for area actors

They will sing, dance, act and show off their scenic creations in a public final performance on the Dixie Center stage. And they want you to be there.
Last Tuesday I visited the Dixie to get information about the camp and take pictures of the youth in action.

Bulldogs eager to get started

The Bulldogs’ players—newcomers and veterans alike, began checking in during the late morning and early afternoon hours of Sunday before attending meetings, being issued equipment and under going physical examinations.
A common sight on arrival day: players, parents and friends hauling in everything from television sets, DVDs and mini-refrigerator for their new “home” at the Hutcheson Dormitory.
Unlike previous years in which only the new players were included, the entire squad will be staying in the same dormitory.

Bus passing could cost lives

Cherri Barmore, a Lincoln Parish School Board notary and transportation department secretary, said a large number of the 70 local school system bus drivers turn in affidavits for her to notarize during the school year reporting the license plate numbers of drivers who have failed to stop for a bus. Barmore estimates the frequency in which people break this law in the parish, however, is much higher than that of which she receives evidence.

Casualties of war adding up

You might remember that shortly after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, my son Justin was deployed to Afghanistan with the 75th Ranger Regiment.
Following that tour, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, which he joined in time for the start of the war in Iraq. He managed to survive relatively intact during both tours and is now attending college in Corpus Christi, Texas.
I thought that when he returned home, my “close” connection to the war was done.
