Mayors protest plans for tax surplus

Voters would have to approve the rededication of funds from a half-cent sales tax, which originally was passed in 1974.
Mayors are protesting the action based upon the wording of the resolution.
“We’re asking them to do what was in the original document,” Dubach Mayor Margaret Rogers said.
“We’ve got to do the right thing,” Hollingsworth said. “It seems pretty clear to me that it belongs to all of us.”

GSU seeks overall improvement

“We’re playing six freshmen on that side right now, but that’s still no excuse. Those are young players who are talented and who, in time, are going to be very good. But that’s no excuse in the way we executed at times against Alcorn State.”
He and his offensive staff hope for a positive turnaround this Saturday when Grambling (1-1) goes to Natchitoches to face Northwestern State University (1-1) in a 2 p.m. meeting at Turpin Stadium.

Recovery effort still ongoing

The number of evacuees who stayed in our area was hard to miss early last week if you went to the store or a fast-food restaurant only to face much longer-than-usual waits in line.
Workers from area electric utilities also got in on the action as they were forced to make repairs throughout the entire state, including our area, in Gustav’s aftermath.
Soldiers from the 527th Engineer Battalion in Ruston are also playing crucial roles.

Community leaders need to powwow

It is also helpful for individual officials to be tuned in to the actions and discussions of government bodies outside of their own. In a perfect world, every mayor, police juror and council member could attend the monthly meetings held around the parish. However, that simply isn’t feasible for reasons we can all understand: family obligations, scheduling conflicts, etc.
This is where a “council of governments” comes in. It would be beneficial to Lincoln Parish for all of our governing bodies to come together regularly to discuss and inform each other of the major issues in each district.

Catalog exhibit opens

The display, put together by Tech professor of art history Saul Zalesch, features catalogs produced from 1874-1956. The catalogs can be viewed until Oct. 3. The Enterprise Center’s viewing hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, call 257-3890.
