State-mandated, high-stakes testing is little more than a month away, and after last year’s School Performance Scores were released, only two schools — Cypress Springs and Ruston Elementary schools — were dangerously close to a failing grade.
So, principals from the two schools were present at the Feb. 7 Lincoln Parish School Board meeting to lay their plans for improvement on the table.

Valentines Day.jpg

Valentine’s Day means different things to different people, so in celebration of the traditional day of love the Ruston Daily Leader asked community members how they planned to celebrate the holiday and what it means to them.
Parish residents had various answers for how they plan on spending the love-focused holiday today.
Grambling resident Trinity Johnson said she plans on celebrating Valentine’s Day the old fashioned way, with dinner and a movie.

One local family will help do their part to raise money for the March of Dimes.
The grandmother to two of Lincoln Parish’s Ambassadors, Cindy Hockenjos has put together a fundraiser to benefit the March of Dimes, for research and education efforts to decrease premature births and infant mortality.
“Ten years ago, (March of Dimes) knew how to save babies, but they didn’t know how to save the mommas,” Hockenjos said. “But March of Dimes was able to fund the research needed to save the babies’ mothers.”

in
Maki, Ken.jpg

We are headed toward spring and planting season for a lot of things.
We are starting to get good reports from South Louisiana on the strawberry crop. When I was a traveling salesman I would schedule several calls into that area for good fresh berries. Now I rely on Sal’s berries. They will be a little later, but fresh and delicious. His are almost as cheap as I can raise them and a lot less work.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with loved ones

Thinking of Valentine’s Day usually brings to mind things like going on romantic dates, delivering flowers or a nice dinner by candlelight for those in a relationship or married couples.
For the single ones, Valentine’s Day can be a holiday to embrace individualism or go out with a group of friends.
However, the holiday can encompass so many other things. It is, after all, a day dedicated to love.

Looking for something a bit different from that everyday routine of TV and computer games? Looking to add just a little more excitement to your day? Well maybe you can. Take another look at 4-H; don’t only think back to when all you did in 4-H was show livestock and cook. We still do those things but we’ve added so much more. La. education reform

DeGrie, Elizabeth.jpg

I have spent more than 20 years in the Louisiana public education system, starting in kindergarten and ending this month with graduate school.
I have done extremely well, graduating from high school as a valedictorian and graduating Louisiana from Tech University magna cum laude. However, I have also seen students fall through the cracks, barely scraping their way through high school and beginning university only to quit after failing.

Celebration provides tribute to late GSU coach

GRAMBLING — For yet another time, adverse weather didn’t dampen the spirit of honoring the late Eddie G. Robinson.
In February of 2010, long lines wrapped for several blocks around the campus of Grambling State University for the grand opening of the museum named in honor of the Tigers’ legendary head football coach.
On Monday night, at the facility that graces his name, Robinson was remembered again, this time with an estimated 200 well-wishers braving near-freezing temperatures and intermittent drops of sleet to celebrate his birthday.
