Hospitalists join patient care team

in

The desire to improve efficiency of care and offer more individualized attention to patients who don’t have a local doctor has led Ruston’s Northern Louisiana Medical Center to join the growing list of hospitals using hospitalists.
Hospitalists are hospital-based physicians who oversee the care of another physician’s hospitalized patients, but don’t care for private patients of their own.
The hospitalist directs inpatient care, in effect, becoming the attending physician. After discharge, they are referred back to their primary doctor.

The invisible weapon of domestic abuse

donna bernard.jpg

Have you ever heard of financial abuse? I had not. It is also called economic abuse and, while circumstances differ in each case, the result is the same.
In financial abuse, the abuser wants to control his victim by using financial tools such as strict allowance without input or say, forcing work in a family business with no compensation, hiding assets, limiting access to funds or just plain taking money away.

in
Kailee.jpg

I have always been an anxious person. I remember being young and wanting events that were completely out of my control to go smoothly, and being upset when they didn’t. I have always been a people pleaser, so I try my hardest to make everyone around me happy and when I can’t do that I get anxious.
The thing about anxiety is, everyone experiences it, but different people experience it in different ways.

Who made me do it — and who knows best?

in
Hollis,Sallie 2017.jpg

Today’s column is serving as a Happy Anniversary wish to myself. Oh, and to my husband, too.
No paper will be printed this year on our actual anniversary, Sept. 4, because it falls on Labor Day, so I’m celebrating early— in print, anyway.
Yes, 25 years ago my husband, the artist Hooshang Khorasani, and I tied the knot in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was a 40-year-old blushing bride.
But it almost didn’t happen.
When I first encountered Hooshang, he’d been in Ruston awhile, visiting his brother. We met at a friend’s house in a way many folks would call “accidental.”

‘Clear the Shelters’ event a success

Four dogs found their forever homes on Saturday as a part of the “Clear the Shelters” initiative in which 4 Paws Rescue participated over the weekend.
The program, which is a national event, helped more than 50,000 pets get adopted during the 2016 events.

Slimmed down Ellis playing well for Raiders

in
Davis, Buddy 2015.jpg

A slimmed down Justin Ellis is “throwing” his new weight around for the Oakland Raiders.
Enough to where the former Louisiana Tech University defensive tackle could be one of the team’s leading players on the “D” unit this season.
Ellis is now down nine pounds under his normal playing weight of 338 pounds.
“More lean muscle,” Ellis said. “I feel like I have been having decent seasons, but I wanted to do better, so I figured I would try this, move around a little better, be more active.”
It apparently paid off in the recent preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Despite Louisiana Tech out-shooting Texas State 15-10 while also controlling a majority of the possession, the match ended up in a 1-1 tie on a hot Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Tech (1-0-1) got on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute with a rocket shot from the Conference USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Nomvula Kgoale. However, four minutes later Texas State (0-1-1) was able to equalize off a converted corner kick.
