When Florida resident Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old child, Caylee, earlier this month, it angered many around the nation.
The fact that Anthony went a month without notifying the authorities that her daughter was missing helped sway the public’s opinion on the 25-year-old mother’s guilt. And it is this same issue that has prompted some states, including Louisiana, to propose new laws.
Last year, a number of people in Lincoln Parish and neighboring parishes contracted the potentially deadly West Nile Virus. The Centers for Disease Control said that 2012 was the largest and most deadly outbreak of West Nile since 1999 when it first appeared in the United States.
This year has been a little lighter on mosquitoes, but safety is still key in preventing mosquito-related disease. With sports seasons starting up, people will likely be spending even more time outside than they might have during the heat of the summer.
Louisiana Tech opened for classes today. With all area universities and schools back in session, there are more individuals in town than there were over the summer break.
Even more people are added to the mix on weekends when most schools have fall athletic events.
Residents have to be especially careful as many students and other residents will be inspired to visit the nightlife that Ruston and surrounding areas have to offer. This means residents have to make sure to pay extra attention for additional incidences of drunk driving that might not occur while school is out of session and there are fewer people in the city.
Countless Ruston residents are in need of a warm meal on a nightly basis and our local Boy and Cub Scout troops are putting forth a helping hand.
The Scouting for Food program has been around for many years, and the goal this year was to collect 9,000 pounds of food for Christian Community Action.
On a recent Saturday, Scouts placed paper bags on residents’ doorsteps with directions. The directions stated that the bags would be picked up the following Saturday and that only nonperishable and canned items would be accepted.
