According to the story, Gherardini has been linked to the Leonardo Da Vinci work because Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century artist and biographer of Leonardo and other artists, wrote that Leonardo painted a portrait of Francesco del Giocondo’s wife. Del Giocondo was Gherardini’s husband.

In addition, del Giocondo was a neighbor and acquaintance of the artist’s father, Piero da Vinci, Pallanti said in the story.
