Make no resolutions this year
We can and should write columns about something that does not center on how we resolve to abstain from this and that.
Those promises are easily forgotten or broken, and they become a permanent record of failure, a fortune-teller’s ball of lazy surrender to be looked back on with loathing.
People are too governed by habit and comfort to submit to big changes like a year’s worth of no chocolate or remembering to floss every night. Lenten observances tend to go the same route. Denying ourself something is not the intent of either effort, but they have both come down to that.
