I didn’t understand why my parents didn’t like for me to spend the night with her, and I didn’t think twice when my mom had to take care of her mom after fights. They were just fights. Everyone’s parents fight.
It took me until my junior year of college to connect the dots and realize that my best friend since kindergarten was one of the estimated 3.3 million children who are exposed to domestic violence each year.
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I am an animal lover. We have always had our own dogs, and since we live out in the country, we often find stray pups. A few years ago, I counted heads around our house, and we had 13 dogs at one time! There were our own (two labs and a pit bull), my daughter’s cocker, my sister’s dachshund, and our house guest’s Yorkie, plus a litter of wild puppies that my husband had found! We are currently down to four dogs — three labs and a boxer rescue from the Monroe Humane Society.
I’ve spent this week with Susan and Jonathan and enjoyed every minute of it. Great-grandbaby Sydney still had unopened Christmas presents, so although New Year’s has come and is moving on, we had another Christmas tree celebration. It reminded me of when my son had his second Christmas — his first with his dad who was overseas in World War II for the first one.
Wesley’s second we spent in Virginia with my husband’s family. It was exciting for me. Things were quite different for this Louisiana girl who’d never seen a truly white Christmas that I could remember.
Very often when people are talking with me about where they learned something or why they did something it is because they read it on the Internet. Apparently, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest are looked at by some as the greatest sources of updated and correct information available to everyone. It’s a scary thought that the Internet has become such a “no questions” asked source of information for many. Even a popular auto insurance company makes fun of the “Everything on the Internet Is True” attitude with the so-called “French Model” commercial.
