Center stops crime early
Armed with the information that 82 percent of adults in the United States serving time in prisons are high school dropouts, Levy asked the state Legislature in 2002 to allow a Truancy Assessment Service Center in this area.
After more than three years in operation, the Center has received nearly 900 truancy referrals from schools in Union and Lincoln parishes.
The Center targets youngsters — those in grades K-5. A student is referred to the Center after five unexcused absences.
